day 2 hormone levels, do mine sound ok?

My day 2 hormone levels showed:

FSH - 9.3
LH - 4
Oestradial - 86

The FSH is not bad but I'm wondering about the oestradiol as have had conflicting info. My gp says below 100 is too low but my consultant says under 180 is good. internet research shows between 25-75 is normal. who is right?

Also, is oestradiol and oestragen the same thing as I know that as get nearer menopause oestrogen reduces.

Hi there Dizzy
do you mind me asking how old you are?

dizzy36 · 14/10/2007 15:46

hi nancy66

I'm 39, have had elevated fsh for a couple of years so I know I have age related 'unexplained fertility'. I know that should look at all 3 hormones to see how fertile still are. 9.3 for FSH is ok for me, LH is always around 4 which is good but oestradiol I'm not sure about. Have read that should be low (up to 75) on day 2/3 but not sure.

do you have any knowledge of day 2/3 hormone levels. would appreicate anything you can tell me.

Hello again

Well I don't know if it's any help or not but my Oestradiol level on day 2 was 246 pmol/L

it says on my print out that during the follicular phase a level between 130-500 is normal.

If your results are also measured in pmol/l then it does sound low and comes outside the normal range.

However beware of 'Googling' and getting info on results from the internet as American tests are measured in different units.

am still none the wiser. Head of the fertility clinic told me that as long as my oestradial levels didn't go over 180 is fine but my gp says that anything under 100 is not great.

Mine was measured in pmol also.

makes sense to me that should be higher as women approaching menopause have low oestrogen levels, but is oestradial and oestrogen the same thing?

Well I would hate to give you the wrong info so perhaps you should make an appointment with your doctor to discuss them. Does sound a bit like you are being fobbed off.

My understanding is that Oestradiol and oestrogen are one and the same - and, according to my doctor's guidelines - yours would be on the low side.

But then again I have a text book cycle and perfect results and I still haven't managed to conceive - so who knows? !

I wonder dizzy, do you have regular periods? My fsh levels are similar to yours I have had 9.1 since i was 28, I am now 38. I have been told that I produce a lot eggs during ivf (about 30 in my 20's and now 15 in my late 30's). In my clinic they muttered about me have polycystic ovaries, but i do ovulate (male infertility is why we started ivf). I wonder whether you have similar and your clinic are talking about your levels in terms of treatment and your doctor is just reading from the text book. I would try and make an appointment with a consultant or nurse at your clinic.

hi soosy. my periods 28 days on the dot until about 3 years ago and now can vary each month from 26 to 28 although I have been told that wouldn't be considered irregular.

have had high fsh since first checked in 2005. been fluctuating up to about 14. 9.3 is the lowest so far.

The thing is when you talk to drs or read about fsh they always say should be read in conjunction with LH (my lh has always been at a low level which is a good sign) but no-one has ever mentioned oestradial as an important hormone to check on day 2.

i have had 3 unsuccessful IUI's. Long story but I was told had just as much chance as anyone else for it to work which was untrue as high fsh further reduces success rate. Have decided against IVF as don't want to put my body (and my ovaries) through it.

Think may write to fertility clinic for another opinion and see what they say.

just seen this on a fertility treatment website. Its american but gives you an idea why its confusing. its states:

'A blood oestradial level on day 3 is a way to potentially discover some of these women with a normal day 3 fsh that may in fact have a decreaed egg qualtiy. Ideally on day 3 there is a low FSH in conjunction with a low oestradial level. If fsh is normal but oestradial is elevated the increase oestradial may be artificially suppressing the FSH into a normal range'

It also states that oestradial should be below 75 but measures it in pg/ml

if my Oestradial is too low then i want to know because it would mean increased chance of abnormality, a chance I don't think I would like to take.
