Problems conceiving after c-section?

Hi - I have a beautiful DS who was born Sept 05. In short - he was 10 days late, I was induced, and had nightmare 40 hour labour ending in an emergency C-section due to "failure to progress" (a hideous phrase!)

I'm 34 and we've been trying for 6 months for another DC with no success. I know that 6 months isn't that long, but I am worried as I have heard that c-sections can cause problems - especially emergency ones. Mine was about 5 minutes start to finish as my DS was in foetal distress. A doctor friend of mine says there is no evidence to suggest a link between c-sections and secondary infertility but I have read a lot that says otherwise. What do you all think? And how soon do you think I should leave it before looking in to whether there's a problem?
Thanks for any advice.

i dont know about that. i had emergency c-section with dd1 and it took a couple of years to conceive dd2 but i put it down to my age (36)

Bueller · 09/10/2007 09:59

I don't know either, but I am in the exact same position to you. Had my DD in 05, emergency c-section after failed induction, she was conceived the first month of trying. We have been TTC for the last 6 months with no success. I'm only 31, but DH is now 44 so maybe something to do with the ageing process... I don't know.

We're going to carry on as we are until Christmas, and if still nothing then it's off to the GP in January.

Obviously it's up to you how long you leave it, but they do like you to have tried for a year before doing any tests - although I think you can get your man's sperm count tested before that.

It's depressing isn't it... especially when everyone else seems to be having babies except you. Best of luck to you

I have had two emergency c-sections and conceived dc2 after 7 months of trying and dc3 the very first month of trying

Obviously as Dizzymummy experienced, the consequences of a c-section can cause secondary infertility but hopefully for you and anyone else trying to conceive after a section it is more an uncommon consequence than a common occurrence.

Good luck.

Hi,

I had DS in 2000 by CS and have had no luck!

I think it's because of my CS.

RFCMummy · 10/10/2007 20:18

Hi all

this is a topic close to my heart as I have had two CS and hope for a third and maybe fourth baby in time. DD1 was emergency cs in 2006 and DD2 was conceived 8 months later girst month of trying ao no problem there but I hope there won't be when we try for DC 3. I have read that adhesions can sometimes cause problems.

Good luck to you all ttc

It is said that wopmen who have a section do take a bit longer to conceive, but equally, some mums don't have any more after that one (through choice) so there has to be someone who takes less and someone else who takes longer to conceive, to get the average.

My section baby was conceived immediately and it took 2-3 months to conceive his sister. Striaght away with the next too.

I wouldn't worry too much. It could be a coincidence and the best thing to do is relax (I know hard to do) and it will happen for you.

NAB3 · 10/10/2007 20:23

You can have secondary infertility after a natural birth too.

jhyesmum · 11/10/2007 16:11

How do you find out if it is the CS that has made you infirtile?

I've had a scan for PSOS but it was clear, so i left it there.

Was interested to read dizzymummy's comments on having blocked tubes after c-sections. I had a HSG yesterday and both tubes blocked (i've had 2 c-sections)I am still reeling from the shock. Seeing consultant on Friday, please Dizzymummy, how did they unblock your tubes?

procrastinatingparent · 12/12/2007 19:20

Had DS1 by emergency section in 1998; although he was conceived very quickly, DD wasn't born until the end of 2001, again by section. I guess it might have been the section that gave me problems but I have always put it down to the stress of moving countries, and trying to finish a dissertion. DD was conceived the month after I handed in my dissertation and went to the consultant to see why I hadn't conceived! I never even got a chance to do the hormone tests (and DH was very relieved he didn't have to give a sample either!).

However, to encourage you, I have since had two DSs, both conceived very quickly, even though I have now had a total of four sections. So obviously the last 3 sections haven't caused any problems like that.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 12/12/2007 19:22

I have heard too that people who have had sections take longer to conceive but some of that accounts for the fact that those mother's tend to wait longer.

I have had a section and the next baby took 2-3 months to conceive. I really think it is the luck of the draw tbh.

Good luck, I hope it happens soon for you.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 12/12/2007 19:23

Goodness, this thread is so old I have answered on it before!

DeckthehallswithboughsofDolly · 12/12/2007 19:32

I think that it is not always due to the section - some people may have problems conceiving after a vag birth as well. The section does cause a lot of rummaging internally and you do get scar tissue of course, but it isn't inevitable that it will take longer. I have had 2 sections - took 6 months to get pg with DD1 and then post section, 3 months to get pg again.

I really hope you get the news you are hoping for soon

peanutmedia · 09/05/2012 22:32

Hello Nappyhead. I was just reading the very old thread "Problems conceiving after c-section?" as we have a 2yr old little boy and been trying to conceive for 10 months, and I too had a c-section. If you are still a member of this site it would be great to hear how you got on with conceiving post-section? We are due to see a gynec. to speak further and I'll be pushing to get my fallopiant tubes checked for blockages and generally look for any uterine scarring as these are real concerns of mine. Thanks!

Lua2020 · 10/02/2022 09:18

I know this thread is so ok but @Nappyhead did you end up having a second child? I’m 34 TTC #2 next month will be cycle 6 I also had an emergency c section and was the same linger labour about 40hours with failur to prgress never made it past 2cm! I’ve been Googling and I’m worried there maybe something wrong due to emergency c section I know it’s 15 years old this but I am literally you, thankyou xx

Lo12345 · 25/05/2022 15:53

@Lua2020 just been reading through this thread have you managed to conceive yet ?
move had two c section 2 emergency and I’m now 7 weeks pregnant and my youngest is 4 months old I hope everything is going okay for you I didn’t know c section can make it harder to conceive it hasn’t been the case with me but from what I’ve been reading it does with some people x

Lua2020 · 25/05/2022 17:08

Hi thank you for your reply I am 10 weeks pregnant now it took us 6 months to conceive I think it’s because I’m a little older I have heard emergency c sections can cause infertility problems but so can natural births I think I was just worried because I googled secondary infertility and worried even more and I got pregnant very quickly the first time round! Congratulations on your pregnancy x
