Private Maternity/Birth Insurance

Had a horrific first pregnancy that wasn't helped by a very poor hospital. Once I had moved hospital the care was fantastic but we are now TTC DC2 and I've decided I would feel much better going private for the pregnancy/birth etc for various reasons.

I've done a little bit of research, and it seems there are some insurance companies who will cover this if you've been with them for over a year.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Or experience of a private pregnancy/birth in general?

I don’t have any experience but I know a few things from what I’ve read. First, can you afford it? And I don’t mean just factoring in the cost for a straight forward birth, but one where you might potentially need a c section and if the baby/you need weeks or months of additional care. It all adds up.

@Greenbks

We can afford it. The cash isn't just sitting there and it'd would certainly be something that required a lot of thought but at a stretch we could. From my research the cost looks to be around 20k in total

No idea on insurance, it’s typically not covered under the usual private medical you might get with work, I’ve only heard of this in the context of expats who might not be entitled to NHS care but that’s not to say it doesn’t exist. I’ve had one private birth 3 years ago, it came to around 17k for consultant lead antenatal care, an ELCS and 3 night hospital stay. I’m planning another for DC2 but likely at a different hospital for logistical reasons and am expecting to spend up to about 20k.
