Friend of mine - 40 - has had no luck conceiving. Has tried IVF once but not enough eggs (I think). She is thinking of trying acupuncture - any thoughts. I want to help her as much as poss - she is lovely and desperate for a child

Hi anneme, I'm new on Mumsnet, but I'm 44 and ttc our second child. I've had problems with ovulation since dd came via c-section, and after ttc for almost 2 years have begun acupuncture. It's making a good difference so far--my temps are stabilising and I'm feeling much better in myself in various physical ways. Still not positive about ovulation yet, nothing on the OPK strips so far and have been doing AP for almost two months. I'm using ISIS scope to pinpoint when to OPK, so hopefully this month will be successful. I'd completely recommend AP, even before I've seen definite ovulation.

I'm about to start a course of acupuncture for same reasons. I am 42 in November. There are quite a few mumsnetters who have had success after AP.

THank you - I am already feeling that I can pass on positive thoughts to my friend.
Any other thoughts out there?
BTW Good luck Missus and Fran - I'll be thinking of you

Hi anneme, I started acupuncture in June to improve the thickness of my womb lining. I've found the sessions very calming and relaxing. I was temping and I did notice that my charts were beginning to look more normal as my hormones were becoming more balanced. In August I started taking chinese herbs too and in September I was fortunate to have a BFP.

A really interesting book is The infertility cure by Randine Lewis. She is a western doctor who is also qualified in Chinese medicine. Her view is that the best results can be obtained by combining diet, lifestyle, acupuncture and herbs. It has some very positive case studies in there and I felt very empowered reading it as though I could do something to help my fertility.

wishing your friend lots of luck xx

I went to my AP practitioner yesterday and first phase erratic temps were discouraging(I didn't drop immediately at start of AF this cycle). Am thinking of changing AP practitioners to someone closer to home and possibly more thorough.
Fransan, are you doing Chinese herbs too? Also, despite all the good things going on, my OPK tests NEVER show positive. Anyone ever ovulate despite negative OPK (such as BFP)?

Hello!! I love this subject cos I love telling my story!!!
I had 2mc and then stopped having periods and had tests etc which showed wrong hormones but can't remember what was going on except I do remember far too much testosterone. So got booked into see specialist but in the meantime went for accupuncture and reflexology and now I have a 15month old!!
The interesting thing was that on my feet there were swellings which were in the womb area and when they went I got pregnant!
I also had a couple of sessions with a lovely healer which I feel helped on an emotional level.
So all the best of luck to your friend. 40 is by no means old. my cousin and a couple of friends had their first at 42+.
I would recommend seeing a herbalist too as there are some potent herbs available.

FranSanDisco · 03/10/2007 18:20

anneme · 04/10/2007 19:41

I have just had my second acupuncture appointment and will be starting chinese herbs as well at the start of my next cycle. I will give it a few months before going for next donor insemination treatment cycle (4 unsuccessful cycles this year). So I hope it helps, but don't know yet. It's worth a try though.

BLeevR · 06/10/2007 21:36

Am having acupuncture since august. It's helped so far to regulate my temps, too, not doing herbs. I feel more healthy and AP seems a positive thing to do, encouraging. I did a search on AP and fertility and it was super encouraging. Lots of documents saying it works!

I started TTC in January this year and my cycles were a bit irregular (25 to 35 days), I stared acupuncture in May and within 2 months my periods were 28-30 days, I also had a lot more EWCM and felt much better generally. In August I was lucky enough to get at BFP and am now 14 weeks pregnant. The month I got pregnant I also used preseed lubricant for the first time (and resigned from my job which was stressful) so I am sure that the combination of them all helped me get pregnant (I turn 34 this week). I would recommend trying all, I also didn't drink much alcohol (i cut down to about 3 drinks a week). Good luck, I don't think 40 is old at all to be trying so long as you do all you can to help things along.

Hi,

I am due to start acupuncture in November after it was recommended to me, ttc since last September (206) very frustrating, feels like vicious circle. I hope that an overall wellbeing will help...
