One positive test, all the others negative, weird period...

Hi, so I have the copper IUD and have had it for about 16 months.

These last couple of weeks, I've not been feeling right, it has been different to my usual pre-menstrual symptoms. Eg, starving hungry all the time, incredibly painful boobs that hurt to touch, quite a bit of dizziness, weird vivid dreams, very emotional, just generally not feeling myself. When my period was about a day late, I got a cheap test from poundland as I was so sure, having the coil, that I wouldn't be pregnant, and didn't want to waste any money on an expensive test, this was just to put my mind at ease, and put the symptoms down to a weird period or a bug.

To my shock, the Poundland test was positive.

Went to the walk in centre, as it was a Sunday and I didn't know what to do due to me having the copper coil. They did 2 tests, as the first one was apparently inconclusive and they weren't sure, then the second came up negative. I showed them the positive test and they didn't really have any explanation for it and said theirs was negative so it's negative.

Did another this morning, and also negative. What I think is my period has began now, though it's a lot more liquid-y and pale, a bit egg whitey even, than normal and very very very light - only when I wipe, barely on the pad at all. It's not like my usual period.

So what I'm wondering is, as given it's been 1 positive Poundland test (which was a pretty strong positive I think, 2 very clear lines) and then 3 negative tests (not sure what they used at the surgery but the one I did this morning was clear blue and clearly said not pregnant) and I've got this unusual for me period, is it maybe some super early miscarriage? Or a faulty test from Poundland, and I've just got a strange period this month? I mean, it did just cost £1....

I keep reading false positives are nearly impossible but given all the rest have been negative...I'm just confused. I know I could phone my GP for a blood test to confirm but given I've got this period, even though it's not like my normal period, I'd feel a bit silly.

Just wondering really why I could have had the one positive test and if anyone else has ever had anything like this.

thanks!

The Poundland tests are ok, but I have heard of false positives. Do you have a picture of it?

Have you done another test this morning?

The only thing I'd be suspicious of in your case is the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. I'd recommend familiarising yourself with the symptoms just as a precaution.

I'd also be tempted to go and get a FRER or clear blue digital with weeks indicator. The digital with weeks indicator is more sensitive than the standard digital. I'd wait until tomorrow morning and do it with first morning urine though just to be sure it's not a false negative.

@Curiosity101 I can't work out how to add a picture? But it was a very clear positive.

Yes, this morning I a clear blue one that said not pregnant, it was the type with the weeks indicator. I feel quite sick this morning as well but that could be with stress!

Yeah that was my worry as well, I know the IUD increases the risk. I've just had a quick check of the symptoms on the NHS site and I do have a kind of watery weird period and a bit of a dodgy tummy. I feel like the walk in should have asked me about this!

I will try and get another for either tomorrow or the day after and also call the GP .

thanks for replying

It's good that it was the weeks indicator one as that is quite sensitive. But if you're experiencing an ectopic pregnancy then HCG can sometimes be a bit misleading.

Whilever you don't have many symptoms I'd try to just stay calm. But I think your plan to call the GP makes a lot of sense. Also I'd recommend a non digital FRER for tomorrow morning if you can get one of those. It's the most reliable one I've seen for very low HCG levels so it should hopefully give you some confidence that you're definitely not pregnant if it comes back negative.

Fingers crossed it's all a false alarm and it resolves quickly for you.
