Are you over 35 or under? Makes a slight difference. Also rough area in the UK does too as to how much they offer and how quickly they do.

First thing they will do is some blood tests. They will be looking for some basic things that can make conception difficult like thyroid issues. They will also do some timed bloods to see your hormone levels. Your partner will need to make a separate appointment to get his sperm analysis tested too. They might do an STD test at this stage too.

Depending on the results of those they will refer you on for more invasive tests and discussions on treatment.

When I was referred a couple of years ago I had bloods and a ultrasound and DH had to do a SA before we saw the gyne consultant. Following that I was booked in for a HyCoSy procedure to check my tubes weren’t blocked (they weren’t) and I was then prescribed 6 months of clomid which is a fertility drug. Still wasn’t pregnant after 6 months on clomid and was waiting for my next appointment when I fell pregnant naturally. 22 months from coming off the pill
to getting my BFP all in all! I have a 19 MO DD now and just about to embark on TTC No2! Expect bloods and SA initially and then they will go from there.

Hey OP so good because I have first hand experience of this at that age in that place. I’ve taken a quote of the answer of a past poster that best explains the start point at the go and then you will maybe be referred to gynaecology for a scan, have bloods taken at endocrinology. Unfortunately, unless you are lucky, they won’t refer you to an assisted conception facility until the two year trying point but depending on your circumstances (eg any other kids,BMI, whether you have regular cycles, whether you ovulate ), they may offer meds like Chlomid before then.

In my case... Blood tests and booked in for a scan... Got pregnant before scan... 🎉.. Hopefully you are equally lucky

My OH already has a daughter, does that effect anything?

I had to have a chlamydia swab as well as what the others mentioned before being referred.

If your dh has a child you'll still be tested for problems and I think would be eligible for clomid etc (if needed). You wouldn't be eligible for ivf or iui. Unless it's different in Scotland.

If the nhs wait is ages and you can afford it I'd go straight to private. I say that as someone who's been trying for dc2 for 2 1/2 years and regrets all the waiting for things earlier on.

Yes, unfortunately it does but there is still some help on the nhs just things like ivf or ICSI would be off the cards but IUI, chlomid, letrezole etc still available

Sorry I’ve just checked again and in fact Scotland is more generous than I thought. Here’s a link of the eligibility criteria re weight, smoking etc . It actually says in the blurb before the criteria starts that from 2016 as long as one of you doesn’t have a child you are still eligible for 3 cycles. If you do go down the ivf or ICSI route I’m happy to talk you through the process there having lived it.

It seems as a PP said that as you're in Scotland you may still be eligible, but I don't actually agree that it would be unfair if you weren't. The NHS is able to offer assistance with fertility treatments for those couples struggling to conceive, but I think it's absolutely right that priority should be given to those couples who are completely childless, of which there are many and only so much available funding. It's a life choice to form a partnership with someone who already has a child.

That said, I wish you luck with whatever route you end up going down
