Colposcopy and TTC

Has anyone one here had a colposcopy?

We were meant to start TTC this month however I've just got an appointment through to go on Monday due to bleeding after sex.
I'm really terrified they'll tell me to wait TTC (I know on the NHS site it says to wait 4 weeks to have sex).
We were meant to start trying early part of last year, then I lost my job and got another job that was horrendous and other stuff came up. Now we we're ready to try and I've now got this appointment through, its reducing me to tears as I feel like someone is telling me I shouldn't be TTC
I'm so irregular with long periods since coming off contraception and norethisterone and have short breaks in between but am now also on day 33 of my cycle (with a negative pregnancy test yesterday).

Would really appreciate if anyone could please help, feeling very overwhelmed and scared with it all 😥 x

Hello! I had a colposcopy about 4 years ago. Ilike you i was bleeding after sex and spotting between cycles. I understand why your scared, it isn't the nicest of things but the procedure is pretty painless, more uncomfortable? The only thing that remotely hurt for me was when they took a sample (hence the no sex for 4 weeks), they told me to cough which is when they took it. It felt like a sharp pinch! I didn't bleed too much after, if at all! (they provided sanitary pads). I had the person carrying out the procedure, a student and another lady who was stood with me and talked to me the whole time! There's a screen you can look at when they use the microscope so you can see what is going on down there (I chose not to look at the screen) . My sample came back with slight abnormalities (was a tiny area) so I then had to have a LLETZ procedure. I've had a smear since then and lt came back fine, I do sometimes bleed after sex still (not often) and spot between cycles, ive had numerous scans over the past year and everything is fine!

I don't know if any of that is helpful but I'm happy to answer any questions you have 😊 good luck! You will be okay!

Hi OP
I had my colposcopy in the middle of ttc in Feb. As the other poster said slightly uncomfortable and if they need to take a biopsy sample it will hurt a little and bleed a little but nothing crazy.
First thing i asked after was can i still ttc and answer is yes 100%. They said i likely had CIN1 (which was confirmed by biopsy later) and they will monitor again in 6 months (so next month) but to absolutely not let this stop us.

We just had to wait a week or so before resuming sex...

My only advice is dont look at her screen. Dont look at what's inside. I did because i was interested and not scared of these things but for some reason it disturbed me a little and i kept thinking about it after when dtd... so not great 😅

i see Robinrose had to wait 4 weeks to dtd again, so i guess it depends on how you feel down there and if there are any discharge bleeding? We only had a week break and things were ok.

But the nurse will tell you when you can do it.

Thanks so much all.
I'm not too worried about the procedure in itself, more the effects of after and when we can start trying. I thought as I did have a normal smear last time and it wasnt due and have only been referred due to abnormal bleeding, I would be able to talk to them if I needed treatment to discuss.

Thankfully, the tears seem to have been major PMS as I've taken my period this morning!

Colposcopy in itself is non invasive. Nothing goes inside you at all. Just the usual speculum. Her magnifier is outside but somehow zooms really far... (i know weird)
So it's just like having the gynae look inside. Nothing more.
Unless they see something they don't like you will be able to have sex and ttc normally right after.
So don't worry x
Good luck

Thanks all for the advice.
I had my procedure today and they've said there are no abnormalities so can start trying ASAP which is good news!
Unfortunately, I was beyond mortified when the Dr found a tampon stuck inside me.
It didn't even show up on the initial scan, only during the exam! Now have no idea if that's been contributing to my symptoms or how long it was in there for but he says apart from some redness caused by that all is okay 🤮
