Very low sperm count and motility - feeling defeated

ThoroughlyForumed · 08/06/2020 12:51

Been TTC #1 for 15 months now. I've had internal exam and blood tests, all very normal. Just received OH's semen analysis results showing he has very low count and very low motility. Morphology normal.

We're both very healthy, exercise regularly, neither smoke or drink, both on conception vitamins (for over a year), healthy weights etc...

I'm feeling so defeated. Will we ever conceive naturally? Does anyone have any experiences with these sort of results and ended up having children?

I've always dreamed of having a big family of 3 or 4 children and OH shares the same dream. Now knowing theres virtually no chance of even 1 I feel utterly miserable.

Find another dream, something that will interest and fulfil you. It won't be the same but could be just as good, there are people who have very good lives without children.

It's possible you will become pregnant but best not to think about it.

AriettyHomily · 08/06/2020 13:05

I don't think that a very helpful response @lynda07

Is IVF an option op?

Lynda07 · 08/06/2020 17:28

I was merely trying to be positive!

kikisparks · 08/06/2020 17:31

@ThoroughlyForumed I think you’d get the best responses if you moved this to infertility Flowers

Hodgewell1 · 16/06/2020 09:19

Low motility can be overcome by ICSI (a type of IVF). If you want to know more then I recommend listening to a podcast called Big Fat Negative. Both presenters successfully used ICSI. Good luck

IckleBear · 16/06/2020 09:24

It's possible to get pregnant just might take a lot longer than usual. You could be lucky and it happen soon, but I don't think it's likely.

worstwitch18 · 17/06/2020 05:48

Sorry to hear you're struggling.

Usually you need to report your thread to get HQ to notice it, I have reported for you so hopefully they will move it and you can get more helpful advice.

PurpleDaisies · 17/06/2020 05:59

I’ve reported your post to be moved op. You’ll get helpful responses on conception or infertility. @Lynda07 I don’t know how you thought yours would be useful to the op in any way.

FifthTimeLucky5 · 17/06/2020 06:15

It’s a positive that his morphology is normal as that is the hardest one to change. How low are the other numbers? Unfortunately no one can tell you whether you will conceive naturally. You could get lucky, but you may get there sooner if you seek help. Has your partner had an ultrasound to check for any blockages?

HopeMumsnet · 17/06/2020 08:08

Hi there,
To help you get a bit more support we have moved your thread to a more suitable board. Wishing you all the very best. x

SunnySideUp2020 · 17/06/2020 08:19

Hi OP
I think your DP needs to be seen by the urologist and they will do a complete ultrasound and also blood tests and urine tests to look for possible infection.
/abnormalities.
My DP went through it as well. They decided to treat an infection called ureaplasma in both of us and gave some specific supplements for sperm. (He was taking wellman conception before).
Just like yours e is a very healthy young man, never smoked and very rarely drinks and very active. So came as a shock. His problem also included morphology unfortunately.
And as it was previously said it's the hardest to change so you have a good chance I'd say.

SunnySideUp2020 · 17/06/2020 08:21

i mean a good chance to probably fix something and obviously to conceive.
For us they offered first insemination if we haven't conceived by autumn.
Then there is ivf with icsi.

fingerscrossed27 · 17/06/2020 08:52

Hi Op,
I wanted to reply just to give you our story of going through this, we had been trying for over a year with no luck, oh's sample showed very very low count of 600,000 so not even a million, no real reason....we went through Icsi privately and conceived our little boy who is now 6 first time which was amazing. 4 years on and without even thinking about being possible I fell with our little girl who is now 3 months old so it may take longer but it may happen naturally, for us it only needs 1 was very true! It was also at an extremely stressful time and with 1 opportunity BlushI felt at the beginning I didn't want to wait with odds like ours so we went with the Icsi to start with, I didn't have any issues like you. So don't give up there's loads of options and time feel free to ask anything xx

Nottherealslimshady · 17/06/2020 09:42

Dont give up. You may need a little help but that's ok. I think I'd get the ball rolling with a clinic and see what they can do for you. You've no issues so you should be quite successful with a little I think.
Now IVF is so good they only put one or two eggs in so maybe ask for one or two more if you want a big family if you're happy to have them all at once :)
Goodluck to you, hope you get your dream soon

PurpleDaisies · 17/06/2020 09:57

This is a ridiculous idea. I doubt any reputable U.K. clinic would do this because if the risks associated with multiples.

ThoroughlyForumed · 17/06/2020 10:21

Thank you everyone for bringing this thread back to life and thank you for the real life stories! After the last week I've done some research about the types of IVF and it seems like the best for us would be IVF with ICSI - we've got a consultation booked for next week with a clinic to get the ball rolling and are feeling a little better about things as at least we've got that to look forward to.
Thank you for the podcast recommendation too I will certainly be listening to that!

Good luck @ThoroughlyForumed. I really hope it works out for you. Flowers

Hi everyone - I know this is an old thread. Just wondered how you were all getting on?

Bells3032 · 28/04/2023 15:28

@ThoroughlyForumed not sure what your numbers are but there are things to help. Please speak to a reproductive urologist first as things like clomid or verioceles may result in an easier fix but if not there are other options including ICSI. I'll tell you a little bit about my story.

My husband had 10 immobile sperm in his first ever count. it wasn't a surprise as he'd had cancer during puberty. Two years later after treatment (this treatment was specific to his issues) his count was at 200k and we were told we'd likely never get it over 1 million so go straight to ICSI. His mophology was 1% though his motility was good.

On started IVF we discovered my eggs count was very low so decided to do a couple of rounds of freezing to save eggs for two kids. Two rounds and it turned out i didn't make many eggs but the ones i made were amazing quality and after those rounds we had 5 AA graded, PGS tested blasts in the freezer. We decided to start the process for one more round and a fresh transfer but i just wasn't responding to the meds so we called it quits and decided to start again the next month. 3 weeks later i started feeling really sick. Turned out i hadn't responded to the meds cos i was 3 weeks pregnant. By the time i found out i was 6 weeks. The following week I had a scan and ta-da there were two little heart beats in there!!!

Sadly lost one at 10 weeks but the other is now a bouncing 16 month old.

We are looking to start TTC no 2 in a few weeks, going to try naturally but if not we have our little frosties in case.

There's always hope. But it is also a good idea to look into other options available and make sure you are aware of any treatment options
