Ubiquinol...how much and for how long?

Hey,
So I’ve been looking into starting on ubiquinol if I don’t get a bfp this cycle.

I’m nearly 38 ttc number 4 and have read lots about it improving egg quality which at my age I need.

I’ve found some that have been recommended on lots of sites, I just keep find different info on what dosage to take?

Some say 300mg a day, some say up to 600mg a day.

Is it better to start with a lower dose?

Also do you take it continuously throughout your cycle, daily like you take folic acid? Or should you stop once ovulation is confirmed and then restart on cd1 again?

Are there any side effects? I’m sure I read somewhere that it can sometimes lengthen your cycle which is the only thing that’s put me off before as I currently take soy isoflavones to bring my ovulation forward as my cycles were long.

Any help much appreciated!!!

When I was going through fertility treatment my clinic had me take 600mg once a day every day for 2 mths prior.

Astella22 · 05/06/2020 12:51

I took it continuously and I didn’t notice any side effects

Moominmiss · 05/06/2020 12:58

@Astella22 thank you

I'm interested to know what this is? I'm currently on CD88 Hmm. Can you buy it anywhere or do you need a prescription?

TazSyd · 05/06/2020 13:06

I’ve also read conflicting info. Some say just take it for first half of your cycle and others say take it continuously.

@TazSyd exactly, that’s what I’ve read. I don’t want to take it past ovulation if it’s best to stop, but equally if it’s best to take continuously then I’ll do that. Just want to be in with the best shot.

I take 400mg twice a day (so two lots of 200mg) morning and lunch time. I take the pharmanord coq10 which came recommended in at starts with the egg. Don't know how successful I have been. Am 50 and have had three miscarriages in the last 6 months but before that had no pregnancies in a year so maybe that's an improvement, I don't know. It is expensive though. You either have to commit to it or I just wouldn't bother.

I've been trying to find out the exact same thing and been doing as much reading as I can. There doesn't really seem to much official guidance on dose as I believe clinical trials are few and far between. I asked my consultant. He said there was no harm in taking them, as long as they weren't prohibitively expensive. I think its Vita/Rita/Nita West (something like that) who sell a range of multivitamins. When you compare the ingredients with just buying ubiquinol separately, and a pregnancy multivitamin from say Tesco or asda, the extra cost of her meds just doesn't make sense. This is what I've managed to work out:

  • CoQ10 is generally a higher dose, usually double, that of the ubiquinol. I often found sites which weren't clear which one they were referring to, and even used them interchangeably.
  • One site said to start at 200mg for 2 weeks for ubiquinol, then reduce to 100mg daily.
  • Several sites recommend kaneka ubiquinol. I vaguely recall its something to do with better absorption of the active ingredient, whereas some ubiquinol comes with a different oil or carrier in the capsule which isn't as readily absorbed.
  • I ended up getting nuyu brand, 200mg capsules and I take 1 day. Only started a week ago though, and no side effects so far.
  • I've also ordered (off ebay) 'It starts with an egg' book which several people have recommended. Seems there is a 2014 and 2019 version, so make sure its the newer one you get.

Best of luck Flowers

Oh and I take it all cycle I've never read anything (and Ive read a lot) that says to stop after ovulation. Perhaps that could be because there is little evidence about the effect on actual pregnancy?

Elouera · 05/06/2020 13:18

FYI- I got the nuyu brand, 200mg off ebay also. 60 capsules for about £24, so 2mths worth if I take 1 a day.

Juno231 · 05/06/2020 13:26

As far as I gather you're meant to take them throughout the cycle. The reason amounts differ is because the absorption rates differ depending on if it's Coq10 or how the ubiquinol is prepared.

I use the vesisorb ubiquinol which only requires you to take 100mg/day for instance: vesisorb

Moominmiss · 05/06/2020 13:30

Ugh, I still feel I don’t know anymore 🙈 the doctors best ones are 100mg capsules, and are the kaneka ubiquinol form.

How do I know the absorption rate of these and therefore how many to take?

I’ve read that there’s no real limit on how much you can take and that there isn’t really ‘too much’. But don’t know how true that is. I mainly just don’t want to take more than is necessary mostly because of how costly they are.

I’ve found them for £33 for a bottle of 60 100mg capsules.

Moominmiss · 05/06/2020 13:38

@hopeforlucky3 you can buy it yourself. I’ve seen this one recommended a few times, but god it’s pricey.
Taking 3 of these a day (300mg) the bottle would only last 20 days!!

hopeforlucky3 · 05/06/2020 16:16

That does seem expensive for less than a months worth.

Moominmiss · 05/06/2020 16:30

thefertiletimes.com/best-coq10-supplements-fertility-egg-quality/

I found this link that suggests 200mg is a good starting dose so might try that instead. At least then a bottle would last a month!

Timeforanamechangeagain1 · 05/06/2020 16:48

Just to update I am 40 not 50... I'm not sure all the coq10 in the world would get me pregnant at 50!

Moominmiss · 05/06/2020 16:52

@Timeforanamechangeagain1 😂 tbh I read it and just thought fair play to you!!

OP posts:
Juno231 · 05/06/2020 17:01

@Timeforanamechangeagain1 haha I was so impressed!!

The kaneka are high absorption ones so I'd be inclined to stick to the amounts on the tin? Ie one per day. But maybe I'm a bit naive about this!

Elouera · 05/06/2020 17:36

@Timeforanamechangeagain1- I too though well, if she can do it, then me at 42 still has a chance Grin

Mctm123 · 06/06/2020 09:19

I’ve been taking drs best 100mg but I’m wondering if I should maybe increase the dosage. My partner takes it too though so it would cost a fortune if we upped the dose! Taking lots of other supplements as well

Slippingcareer · 06/06/2020 10:13

Mine just arrived today, so going to start with 200mg a day. £25 for 4 months supply. Fingers crossed it helps.

Ubiquinol...how much and for how long?
Moominmiss · 06/06/2020 10:18

@Mctm123 it is so expensive for the ubiquinol stuff. But I think I’d feel happier paying the bit extra for it.
I’m going to start with 200mg each day, so the bottle of 60 capsules will last me about a month. But I haven’t got my oh taking anything. He’s much younger than me, very fit and healthy so I’m fairly confident I’m the issue lol. I’m not sure I could afford for us to both be taking it 😂

Wesstywoo · 06/06/2020 12:01

I got mine from here and was taking 200mg per day
