Third pregnancy loss - any success stories?

Hi

I’ve just had my third miscarriage in a row. No children and very worried I won’t be able to have any - this is a really daunting thought and really upsets me. Has anyone been in a similar situation and had a positive outcome? I’m going to request testing although worry what the results could be.

Thanks

Sorry for your losses. Everyone is different but I did have success. 1 year TTC with no pregnancy at all and then 3 miscarriages in 2 years. It was a bleak and horrible time where I thought we would never have children. On the fourth pregnancy where I started bleeding I thought it was all over again but a 9 week scan showed a strong heartbeat and my son is now 5. His little brother was born 17 months later (we thought it could take a long time again but thankfully it didn’t).

I hope you have support and I wish you luck.

I'm sorry for your losses @KDM73 I had my third loss in February (no children) and its really hard. Have you had any tests done? You're eligible for recurrent miscarriage testing, so I'd ask your GP to refer you. Mine have all come back normal, but I guess no answers could be a positive as we've ruled out some things like sticky blood. Have you had your thyroid checked? Mine is slightly raised (should be less than 2.5 for fertility, ideally under 2) so I'm on levothyroxine now. I'm in a supportive group on here - the penguin huddle on the conception board, come and join us there ❤️

@AltCarbon you've given me lots of hope! Our stories are so similar - I'm on the fertility pathway as no pregnancies for over 16 months, but then 3 losses in a year) we've been ttc 2 5 years now). Did you have any fertility interventions to help you concieve? Congratulations on your two boys :)

VenusStarr · 26/05/2020 08:56

2.5 years that should say

Sorry for your losses. I had first child no problem fell pregnant with second and lost at 6weeks, third at 8weeks and 4th at 18weeks. Then with my 5th pregnancy all was ok (well added complications of strepB infection, gestttional diabetes and the increased monitoring due to multiple losses) and he's now 8months playing in front of me. I do hope your rainbow comes soon for you. Xxx

I had 3 losses in about 12 months, altho I have a much older DD. It was heartbreaking, and I spent a lot of time trying to work out if I could keep going through it.

Somehow got a pregnant within a week of my third loss and despite gestational diabetes had a really smooth pregnancy and now have 18 month old DS. I'm also 29 weeks with my third, which wasn't really planned, so I'd say keep on keeping on.

My cousin is a midwife and suggested I try baby aspirin, which I started straight from last loss. This time I took it from bfp, which my consultant is more than happy with. Defo worth a try. Good luck!

@VenusStarr We were on the fertility pathway too as it had been a year with no pregnancy but all tests including the later miscarriage ones were inconclusive. As there was not an official problem (which was tough to swallow when every month brought fresh grief) we didn’t have any interventions. We just kept trying. It was really difficult but we were so grateful that it happened for us.

Wishing everyone strength for their journey.

Sorry for your losses. I had my 3rd MC 2 weeks ago, and also no children. Have you been referred to the recurrent MC clinic? Have you had any testing so far? Did you sent off the last MC products for testing?

KDM73 · 26/05/2020 10:17

Thanks for all your replies, it’s helpful to hear other people’s stories. It’s a really hard thing to go through ☹️ I have fallen pregnancy VERY easily with my 3 pregnancies but starting to think that may not be a good thing!

@VenusStarr I’ve requested to be referred for testing but not sure when that will happen due to covid. I have PCOS and sure I had my thyroid checked around that time which was fine. Spoke to the early pregnancy support just now and they gave stories of women who have had a huge amount of miscarriages (like 14 plus) but have gone on to have children so there is hope! X

@Elouera sorry to hear about your losses also.

I spoke to my GP and early pregnancy support. I’m getting referred for testing but need to wait because of covid. Never had any contact with testing clinics before though so not sure what to expect.

They spoke through the obvious, like maintaining a healthy weight and watching alcohol intake. Also told that taking folic acid for 3 months before conception CAN make a fairly significant difference on pregnancy so I’m going to get better at this (rather than stop-starting). At least these small things are in our control and may help things click into place one day x

Can I ask how old you are OP? I've been referred to the multiple MC clinic also, its closed due to covid though. My understanding is that they will obviously take the history, when you MC, how long TTC, medical issues etc. Do several blood tests- thyroid, hormone levels, clotting disorders and possibly STI screens again. A more detailed scan/ultrasound. I already had a hycosy 2 yrs ago, so not sure if its that again, or just an ultrasound? they might do semen analysis again, but I'm not 100% sure TBH.

I was taking 400cmg folic acid for years (been TTC 9yrs in total!). This last pregnancy I had IVF, and they said I should have been on the 5mg one! I'm early 40's and BMI is overweight, but not obese and no history of neural tube disorders. If you only need the regular dose, you can get a pregnancy multivitamin from Tesco and asda which contains almost the same ingredients as pregnacare, but its much cheaper.

I'm also looking into CoQ10 or the purer form ubiquitol. I've read it can improve egg quality, but there is only limited data. I spoke to the IVF consultant today. He agreed that there isn't enough evidence to advise everyone to take it, but if its not too expensive, its worth a try and cant do any harm!

best of luck Flowers

@Elouera I’m 34. We’ve only been trying for a year and half so no where near as long as you - I really hope it all works out for you as I know how draining it all is. It sounds like testing will be thorough so hopefully the clinics get up and running again ASAP. I’ve got PCOS so wonder if that could be having an impact. I used to take inositol (from my protein.com) for it as I read somewhere it can help with symptoms but stopped taking it when pregnant. My GP didn’t know anything about it nor did the pharmacist but they advised speaking to Holland and Barratt as they get training in herbal supplements etc and know more than a pharmacist! I suppose I’ll try anything too, might just be the thing that helps.

Hi KDM73. You sound in a very similar boat to where I have been - falling pregnant quickly and easily but then miscarrying. It's heartbreaking going through it again and again ❤️ I'm so sorry.

I had a range of tests, nothing came back. My pregnancies were tested, no abnormalities. My consultant essentially said "some people's body's don't seem to be very good a discerning between good and bad embryos (she used the term 'super fertile', but this isn't an evidence-based diagnosis, just a theory). Just keep trying, most people have a baby eventually". It was encouraging and difficult to hear at the same time. The thought of going through it again and again, not knowing if/when it would happen was exhausting.

Anyway, I had 5 miscarriages over 3 years, and then I had my son. No changes in that pregnancy, I think it was just luck that time around.

Just wanted to share my story, as when I was in your position I used to scour the internet for stories of women who'd been through similar things. It's such a hard and worrying time. Best of luck for any future pregnancies xxx

KDM73 · 27/05/2020 14:36

@MsFrog. Thanks for your reply, it’s really helpful and gives a bit hope too! I’m glad to hear that things eventually worked out for you. X
