I feel so terrible. We have just got our puppy but also had a scan yesterday to show a viable pregnancy.

I have had 3 miscarriages and in all honesty didnt think I would be in this situation when we put a deposit down.

Now we have him and I have so much anxiety as to how I will cope when the baby comes.

Anyone have any experience?

If you are having doubts, it would be far kinder to rehome now or ask the owner to rehome before the pup gets too big and used to you.

I have five dc and we had one puppy (now 6 years old). I can tell you the children were a doddle in comparison to the puppy. To me it's really the wrong time to have a puppy. You will be house training at the same time as morning sickness which for me would be impossible. You will have a bundle of energy at a time when you are tired and need to rest and then you will have an adolescent dog (whole new level of awful compared to a puppy) when you have a new baby.
I'm sure some people find puppies easier than I did and there is no doubt that having a dog in your life brings a lot of happiness but it's a lot of hard work needs putting in to get a well behaved dog in your home and it's really going to be difficult to put that work in when you have a baby as well.
You could contact the breeder and ask to return the puppy but do it sooner rather than later to give the puppy the best chance of finding a permanent home asap.

What breed of dog is it? Will you be at home with it through the pregnancy? I wouldn't rush to get rid of it, you have 8(?) months before baby comes to train it. Poor dog.

I think you should have put more thought into getting the puppy when you did as sounds like the puppy is now going to be rehomed.

I don't mean to sound harsh and not trying to make you feel bad - I just feel strongly that when people get a new pet, they need to be sure that no matter what happens, the pet is for life. It's just not fair on the animals in my opinion.

If you're having doubts now, it's likely you could struggle more with the puppy as your pregnancy develops and when you have a crying baby.

As much as I don't agree with it, I think you should rehome now to be kinder to the puppy. A lot of dogs really struggle with being shipped from pillar to post so at least now, the pup is more likely to adapt into a new home with less stress than it if was 6 months down the line.

Sometimes rehoming is the kindest thing, sounds like this would be the case for your pup. Contact a breed rescue please who will find it a good home - do not sell on gumtree etc.

Most reputable breeders will take the puppy back, is that in your contract?

scochran · 13/05/2020 08:39

Can the puppy go back to the breeedr? They might have waiting lists. I know people who have got lovely dogs from being on breeder list and were happy to have them a bit older.
Don't feel bad, this is just the situation breeders offer to take dogs back from. On the o ther hand puppy will be at least 9 months when the baby us born. I loved the routine of walking my dogs when I had young children. It really helped keep my spirits up and get good exercise
