When to contact GP?

In normal circumstances at what point do you contact your GP? I’m 36.5 and my husband is 43, and we conceived our son on month 2 of trying.

We’ve now been trying for 6 months with no luck. I use clearblue ovulation tests each month and the instructions on it say to contact the GP after 6 months if you’re over 35.

I'm sure that's right - after a year of trying for under 35s but after 6 months of trying if over 35.

It's 6 months aged over 35 BUT you need to be realistic that all they'll do is do a blood test on you to check you are ovulating and maybe a sperm test for your DH

Because you aren't entitled to fertility treatment on the NHS as you already have a child then ultimately if a test comes back poor then you're only option is to go private so it may be better to have them done privately anyway and skip the long waiting times on the NHS

If you were over 40 I'd say go straight to private now and don't wait but given your age I'd try for another 6 months then go private

Not many people conceive as quick as you - for the majority of people it is within 1 year to 2 years so I just think you need to lower your expectations x

I'm sure you still get help with your fertility if it's your second, only ineligible for ivf however things can change regionally over the UK. Better to check with your doctor!

Good luck !

Unfortunately not - there are no trusts in the U.K. that offer NHS fertility treatment for a second child

There is maybe 1 or 2 that will allow it if say the man has a child from a previous relationship but the woman hasn't any of her own children

Unless you don't ovulate in which case you can often get clomid from a sympathetic GP. Nothing else is available bar a few standard tests that will only diagnose an issue but they won't treat it
