TTC breastfeeding and overactive thyroid?

Firstly I wanna start of with how grateful I am to have my little boy. 14 months ago I gave birth to DS and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

4 months after birth I felt unwell in myself. Tired, heart palpations and just unwell. Started getting vitiligo on my hands. Dismissed it as a ‘new mom’ feeling who’s probably washing her hands too much.

Fast forward to 9 months PP where I got told I have an overactive thyroid. That was in December.

I have had continuous blood work drawn and no conclusion. But my GP keeps messing up my bloods. Last test I had was 25th March and although they were meant to test me for thyroid function AND antibodies, they only did the one and not the other.

I put my irregular periods since birth (only two so far in dec and March) down to breastfeeding. But I got told by locum GP that until my thyroid issues are fixed, my progesterone levels won’t be great. So even if I have a visit from Aunt Flo, it might be anovulatory 😞 so I won’t have even released an egg.

I know there’s a pandemic going on and I know that I already have a baby, but I’m so disheartened and frustrated as I don’t know how long it will take for my levels to be normal enough for my fertility.

Has anyone got any experience of conceiving with an overactive (hyper) thyroid? I need some positive advice or stories please!

You really need to get your thryoid levels stable before becoming pregnant again. Elevated T4 and nonexistent TSH which are a part of overactive thyroid can cause issues with your cycles and can put you at a higher risk of miscarriage.

I was told I wasnt allowed to TTC until my levels were stable. It took 10 months

Meant to add. I was on carbimazole to begin with and then moved to PTU once my levels had stablised. Have you got an appointment with an endocrinologist sorted?

@ilovetrees30 no I haven’t. I’m still at the stage where they’re taking bloods to establish if I have this or not!! With GP’s being shut and me having to keep 6-8 weeks between tests, it’s taking ages.

I feel like going private and going to an endo privately but don’t know whether this will be acknowledged by the NHS.
