TMI - strange bleeding- why suddenly a shorter luteal phase?

Hi

I’ve been lurking on these pages since I started TTC #2 9 months ago but this is my first post. Firstly a little bit about me...

I’m 36 and already have a DS who is 3. He was conceived on our first month of trying. Just over a year ago I also fell pregnant unexpectedly but I unfortunately had a mc. It therefore seemed that I could get pregnant fairly easily but trying for #2 has shown that this is not the case!!!

Anyway, this month I experienced some very light bleeding at 8dpo - it was slightly pinky browny cm. At 9dpo this had gone but today (10dpo) after a bm (sorry TMI) I had some very thick dark red/browny blood. This appears to have gone for now. My period isn’t due until Sunday and I’ve never had spotting this early (only ever actually had spotting once before (which was the day before expected period)). My periods are pretty irregular (between 32-40 days) but I use OPKs which is how I know my period for this month is expected on Sunday.

From my research it looks like today’s blood wasn’t in line with implantation bleeding (it was too thick) so I am ruling that out and I’m sure it will turn to full flow soon. However what I’m wondering is why I’m suddenly having a much shorter luteal phase? Could this mean I didn’t ovulate this month? Could it mean something else?

I had an appointment with the GP scheduled for last month to start the discussions for going for tests (as I’m 35 I believe I can see the GP after 6 months of trying). But this was cancelled due to Covid.

Any thoughts/experiences of this type of thing would be greatly appreciated!

Your luteal doesnt change, if your cycle length changes its because you ovulated early or late. Bleeding in the luteal phase could be low progesterone levels, so breakthrough bleeding, but its also possible to have implantation between 6 and 12 dpo, however the type of bleeding you describe doesnt sound overly implantation, so i agree with you there. Wait and see if AF arrives sunday and of not take a test maybe x

Thanks for your reply. Yes I see what you mean. I'm fairly confident when I ovulated had a positive OPK. I wondered if the bleeding might mean low progesterone. Something to mention to the dr I guess if/when I eventually get to see one.
