No AF since coming off the pill

OH and I decided we would TTC so I came off the pill (Levest) in February. I haven’t had AF since then and today will be CD62. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19 (I am 33 now) and I’ve pretty much been on the pill for most of the time since then so I guess this complicates things even more as I can’t remember how regular I was before. I did a test last week just to make sure and it was a BFN.
I’ve done a few OPKs at random times but all negative for ovulation. I was looking at the clear blue app ones but it stated they were not suitable for PCOS.

Has anyone else had this problem and when should I go to see my doctor if AF doesn’t arrive?

Hello! I dont knos if this helps but I came off the pill in sept 2018 and didnt get my first af till december 2018! I thinj i read somewhere it can take a while to get uour first period. But im sure if you are worried you could call a doctor for advice?

wannabebump · 21/04/2020 09:09

I was just over 100 days before AF arrived after stopping the pill, I was really worried but assured it was quite normal. We started TTC anyway, on the chance I'd randomly ovulate!

If you have PCOS then you don't need to wait the recommended year before seeking help with conceiving, although obviously you'll have to wait until all this covid business is over.

bluebell94 · 21/04/2020 09:21

My first cycle when I came off was 75 days - I think it if it takes more than 3 months you should see GP, NHS site says it can take up to 3 months.

Candoolili · 21/04/2020 09:36

Took me a full year- got bloods etc done and all 100% normal. I was exercising lots at the time which I reckon delayed things- wasn’t remotely underweight, if anything borderline overweight but apparently exercise does funny things to hormones if at sufficiently high intensity.

Thanks for your replies. It sure is frustrating waiting for AF! I think I should see if I get one within 3 months and if not then go to my doctor. I’m fully expecting my PCOS to cause issues, although I do remember when I was diagnosed and I lost some weight the frequency of periods improved. I’m still an ‘average’ weight now so I’m hoping they will be fairly regular, just awaiting that illusive first one now!

Just thought I’d update, so AF still hasn’t arrived. I’m booked in for bloods next week to check hormones/thyroid etc and they’re sending me for a scan

Hey @xemmagx - I'm on something like CD 54 with no period in sight after coming off the pill. No PCOS that I know of but have been on the pill since I was a teen so no idea what they were like prior either. I'm planning on asking for investigations if nothing happens in another couple of months. I hope all your bloods etc come back okay! According to the internet, up to 6mo is considered pretty normal!

xemmagx · 11/05/2020 12:06

@TheDaydreamBelievers I think the NHS website states up to 3 months for it to return, so if I were you I’d talk to your doctor around then. I just want to get everything checked for peace of mind really and to rule out anything else that could be the issue other than the PCOS that I am already aware of. My biggest worry was that my doctor would fob me off and ask me to wait longer, but he was really helpful.

Thanks @xemmagx - hopefully my GP will be as responsive as yours!

I also have PCOS and like you was on the pill for over 10 years. When I came off it my AF returned after 2 months but the first 5 periods were really short and light, more like break through bleeding like during a pill break than an actual period. They were really irregular too.

We were TTC but I wanted to wait a bit longer before visiting the doctor to see if it would happen naturally (I was only 28 so was happy to take things slowly as we had only been married a year and I wasn't in a huge rush) I did lots of research online and read that a lot of women with PCOS found the ketogenic diet improved their symptoms so I thought I would give it a go- I followed this for 2 months and my periods went back to regular heaviness and my cycles regulated, and by month 4 I was pregnant!

We now have 4 DC and each time I have been TTC I have lowered my carb intake. You’re definitely doing the right thing getting checked out- it can be so worrying when TTC not knowing what issues could be coming into play so getting a better picture is really helpful. Have a look into the link between PCOS and the keto diet though, it’s not for everyone but it’s been really helpful for managing my symptoms as I suffered with acne and mild hirsutism as well as fertility issues.

I don't have pcos (that I know of) but it took me 101 days to get my period after coming off the pill and then my second period which I'm on now came on 52 days, it will take time but they will get there xxx

xemmagx · 28/05/2020 10:15

I’ve had my blood test results back and all came back as normal. I guess I just wait for my scan but if it does show PCOS still being the issue what would be my options? I am on CD 99 today and still no AF in sight

Just to update, I'm now CD72 and getting my first ovulation positives- hopefully that means either conceiving or first AF post pill are on the way for me!

Sorry I cant be of help around PCOS but I know there are lots of threads with info on treatment

xemmagx · 28/05/2020 12:44

@TheDaydreamBelievers congrats! I have given up on OPKs for now as they have never been positive for me so far haha
