Have stopped taking pill but have not had a period

Hi, I’m new to mumsnet but looking for some advice please.

I have been on the pill (where you don’t take a break) for five years and came off on 1st January as we are TTC.

I have not had a period since I stopped taking it, no spotting or any signs at all.

I’ve been to my GP and they said they could do some tests (obviously with everything that’s going on it will be a while before they do) but that it could take a year for my periods to come back. I’ve never had regular periods and the reason I went on the pill was because I’d either have them constantly or none at all.

Does anyone have any experience of this? The GP mentioned it could be polycystic ovaries. I had an ultrasound five years ago but they didn’t find anything wrong and just told me to go on the pill.

I’m just really worried now we’re TTC- any advice/ experience would be appreciated x

hi I been on pill for 15 years it took 6 months for me to have a period xxx

Thanks for replying! That’s reassuring to hear. Do you mind me asking, had you had irregular periods before hand? Or just after stopping the pill?

I was on the pill for many years and it was 2 months until I got a period after stopping it. Can't remember what my cycles were like before. Seems some people cycle straight away, for others it can take several months. Hope you won't have too much longer to wait.

Ask for your prolactin levels to be checked via blood test. The pill can raise them and if they are very high you can take medication (dostinex) to bring the levels down and re start your periods - I had to do this both times I wanted to conceive my children - I do have a pituitary tumour however but you can have prolactin issues without having this, it’s more common than people realise.

@Shrummy that must be so annoying!
I stopped taking the mini pill in February and had my first period beginning of March and second one beginning of April.
I’m very shocked with how quickly my ovulation and periods came back as I had been on it for 7 years and was told they can take up to 6 months to come back.
I think I’ve read in here before that if they don’t come back after 6 months then to see the doctor.
Every woman’s body is different, and maybe delayed due to stress with the current global situation?
I hope your AF does arrive soon x

I’ve recently stopped the mini pill after 3 years, as of a week 1/2 ago. Nothing at all has happened yet but I’m not too surprised. Hoping for something soon though! Had irregular periods for a few years but in the couple of years prior to being on the pill they were regular, but I had a longer cycle of 34ish days. X

It took six months for me. I was also fed up by that point and bought agnus castus supplements so can’t say for sure whether it was that or if it would’ve happened anyway. It probably took another six months on top of that before I was having completely regular cycles. Mine had been very regular before going on the pill - but I was on it for around 12 years.

BrooHaHa · 19/04/2020 22:37

Mine just didn't come back. Nothing for two months and then I got pregnant. I presume you've tested?

Shrummy · 20/04/2020 00:28

Thanks for replying everyone! Yeah I’ve taken a few tests since I stopped the pill but all negative! That’s reassuring you got pregnant without them coming back- the doctor told me I wouldn’t be able to until they came back because I’m not ovulating unless I’m having a period.

I guess I’ll just have to wait a while and see what happens. I think I’ve already been worried about when we start trying because my periods were so irregular before I started the pill.

@Bagelsandbrie
Thankyou! I’ll definitely ask the GP about this. They’ve done a couple of blood tests but they didn’t really explain what they were specifically testing and that it just came back normal.

Get a new doctor. You can ovulate without having a period, trust me. You ovulate before your period anyway, so ovulation comes first! My midwife told me that women coming straight off the pill tend to either fall pregnant immediately or take quite a while.

I'm pregnant now with DC2, conceived this one while breastfeeding DD and my periods still hadn't returned (18 months post partum) so when the midwife asked the date of my LMP I was able to truthfully say over a decade ago!
