Has anyone been prescribed progesterone after experiencing miscarriages and did it help? Thank you in advance.

Yes but I am with an ivf clinic and it's pretty standard

I have also taken it during a natural conception in between IVF and I still miscarried

There is no point in taking it unless you have confirmed low progesterone. Most miscarriages are chromosomal issues so it will make no difference but it can delay having a miscarriage if the pregnancy is non viable

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted Ok, I wasn't sure if it would help as others have mentioned it. I've been having IUI at my clinic. I've had several rounds and been pregnant twice but miscarried. I'm considering getting a screening which I may need to pay for privately through the clinic as I think you can only have it through the NHS when you've had 3 miscarriages. So will hopefully see if there is anything wrong. I'm at the hospital today for medical management for my latest miscarriage and they said there they may be able to test the baby to see if there is anything. I just hate the thought of ever going through this again so trying to see what other options could help. Thank you for your reply.

I'm sorry for your loss 💐

Getting the baby tested is the best thing you can do to see if any chromosome issues

I attend a recurrent miscarriage clinic having had 5 and I asked for progesterone tests until i was blue in the face but was refused - the NHS doesn't consider it an issue worth testing 😢

LetMeIn321 · 23/03/2020 08:06

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted Oh gosh how awful. I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how hard it must be having 5. I will definitely speak with my clinic because it seems they don't offer anything unless you ask specifically for it. I'm not sure if it could be me and my do or not working together, of there could be issues there as I've used the same donor each time.

Hi @LetMeIn321
Even if you ask the NHS won't do it I've found.....
If you are over 40 then 70% of eggs are expected to be genetically abnormal rising to 90% by age 43+ so the only way to really investigate it is to genetically tested any embryos via IVF with PGS X

So sorry you are going through this.

I also attend recurrent miscarriage clinic, I've had 3 early (between 5-6) weeks and a MMC. I was prescribed progesterone without even asking as they think earlier miscarriages are a result of low progesterone.

I know you they say you have to of had 3 miscarriages for NHS but if you are older I'm sure it's over 35, if that's any help.

Also we had our last miscarriage tested which turned out that she had T21. Doesn't make the pain any worse but having an answer does help a bit.

Be kind to yourself and your allowed to say 'this is shit' because it is.

I'm 33. And this has happened twice. I had the medical management. They said they'd send off the placental tissue for testing to see if there is a medical reason and we should find out in about 8 weeks. My fertility clinic said they offer a miscarriage screening service but they can't do it currently due to Covid19 as they've closed the clinic.

@PutOnAHappyFace Thank you for your message. I'm sorry to hear of your experiences. It's so difficult and certainly is shit. I'm 33 but have been told I have a low AMH level so this could mean low quality eggs. When I was at the hospital they've said they're sending some of the placental tissue for testing to see if there's a medical reason. So we shall see. I'll also update on here when I get the results. x

I had two early miscarriages last year, 5.5 weeks in June and 6.5 weeks in November with the second one my progesterone was low when I miscarried but my fertility specialist said that low progesterone is a sign the pregnancy is not progressing and giving progesterone won’t help.

I ended up changing doctors and my new doctor disagrees. I’m also on Clomid to help me ovulate because I have PCOS and my new doctor says that there is some thoughts that if you need intervention to ovulate it’s likely that you will need progesterone support.

I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and have been taking 200mg progesterone pessaries since I got a positive test, had my first scan last week and the baby is measuring right on track and had a strong heartbeat so fingers crossed.

In my opinion progesterone is worth a shot.

CeibaTree · 26/03/2020 21:32

I was put on progesterone after conceiving following a miscarriage (by a private consultant), however it made no difference and I had a mmc. We has the fetus tested and it was found to have T21 - so no amount of progesterone would have saved that pregnancy. So unless you have low progesterone I don't think it makes a difference. As a pp said most miscarriages are due to chromosomal issues sadly.
