Hi does anyone know if ovulating late in your cycle is normal? Does it affect your chances of conceiving. I've had zero answers from my GP, any advise welcome. Thanks

Hiya Deejayrus.

I don't really know very much about this side of things, but Sweetheart has posted a very interesting link on the 'diet to aid ovulation' thread. In particular this bit seems to relate to what you are talking about:

"Agnus castus is particularly helpful for those women who have a luteal phase defect (shortened second half to the cycle) or those with high prolactin levels, because it stimulates the proper functioning of the pituitary gland which controls the hormones."

Sorry I can't be more help, but I didn't want you to think no one was responding to your message. Come and visit us all on TTC11 - there are lots of very helpful and knowledgeable people on there.

I do remember something about this on one of the ttc threads. Someone was asking the same thing. It definitely has some bearing. as MRs wed says, try posting the question on ttc11 - someone will know there

Deejayrus · 05/10/2004 18:08

Thanks for the responses. What is ttc11? Sorry new to this.

ttc = trying to conceive
As I understand it late ovulation is not a problem as long as your luteal phase (ie number of days after ovulation and before af) is longer than 10/12 (?not sure which - check on fertility friend) days - so if it's long cycles should be ok but if it's normal/short cycle with late ovulation it may have an effect.

futurity · 06/10/2004 17:35

I ovulated around day 20/21 but my period came on day 29 so I had the short luteal phase problem which stopped me conceiving for a while. I took a number of supplements (mainly Agnus Castus which has ben mentioned before) which helped as I got pregnant shortly after starting the supplements.

How do you know you are ovulating late Deejayrus?

Deejayrus · 07/10/2004 10:45

Thankyou so much for the responses. I know I ovulate late due to ovulation tests I have been doing. I have read that it might be all the exercise that I do with my job that makes this happen. However my period comes late when this happens so am hoping that is because the luteal phase is normal?

Sounds like it..so long as your period comes 10-11 days afterwards that should be alright.

Jezebel · 07/10/2004 20:33

Futurity, I am thinking of trying Agnus Castus. Did you take it up to ovulation and then stop (since you are not supposed to take it while pg)?

Jezebel · 07/10/2004 20:34

PS what other supplements did you use?

jeddah · 10/10/2004 10:07

deejayrus
about late ovulations and luteal phases.

I ovulate very late aswell, about day 20/21 and bleed on day 29/30 and have read alot of research into Vit B6 supplement, which can lengthen the luteal phase.

This month I have ovulated on day 23! (yesterday!), but I am now taking vit B6.....so we will see if it works. However, I didn't manage to take it on day 1 of my cycle only managed to get hold of it on day 14 of my cycle...anyway I will let you know

Amfs · 10/10/2004 11:20

I had a short post luteal phase ... I had regular 28 - 30 day cycles, ovulating day 22 or 23 (you count days from the first day you bleed BTW)

If the length between ovulating (24 - 48 hours after positive OPK test) is less than 10 days it can be a problem because even though the egg can be fertilised it can't implant in the womb before the lining disintegrates hence no pregnancy .. they say it can be 8 days long but 10 is the normal

You can do high dosage vitamin B6 (take every day over 200mg .. you have to go to a health store and ask especially as normal B6 is only around 30mg) but I think you need to give it a few months to build up .. personally I didn't have that kind of time left

My consultant put me on low dosage clomid (50mg for days 1 to 5) to kick-start my system .. and I conceived DD (now 5 months old) first cycle (the clomid didn't bring my ovulation forward though it just lengthened the post-luteal phase)

you need to take B6 throughout cycle to be effective

Amfs · 10/10/2004 11:26

In terms of other things to help you conceive, I've posted this advice before:

Baby aspirin (less than 81mg) daily throughout cycle

Vitex Agnus Castus from period to ovulation (although some theories that can be taken throughout cycle but should be stopped when pregnancy established)

Evening Primrose Oil (1500mg to 3000mg per day) from period to ovulation (do not take past ovulation)

Vitamin B6 (100mg to 200mg) most B6 supplements have a lot less so should ask specifically for this
