How do you know when a "threatened miscarriage" becomes an actual m/c?

hello,
I started bleeding yesterday, about 4 hours after I got a bfp, 2 days after AF due.
Phoned NHS direct who reckoned it was a threatened m/c and told me to 'watch and wait'. I've bled today too, tho less heavily. I am pretty much resigned to the fact that I am miscarrying 'properly' now. If anyone has any ideas it would really help. Feels very strange to be in such a limbo and not know when it will be over

Poor you. So worrying. I don't think you can know for certainly without having a scan and it may be too early to see anything. I'd go to my GP if I were you. Try to get an appointment tomorrow.

you can do another pregnancy test.

Best wishes.

shreks - anything is a help it is just good to hear from other people and get out of my own head for a bit! BBBee - wouldn't it show up as positive even if I had a m/c, cos of the hormone levels? How long do you reckon it would take for a test to show as negative, if I am miscarrying?

I don't think a pregnancy test would tell you anything. It measures hormones and yours will still be high. How pregnant are you? I can't remember at what stage they can see a foetus and/or a heartbeat. You need a doctor. Try not to worry. Call your surgery in the morning.

I had lots of episodes of bleeding with DS and thankfully all was well.

I did m/c my 2nd preg at 12 weeks, bleeding got heavier over 48hrs, went to A+E who said a mc is when bleeding heavier than normal Af (ie have to change sani pad more often).

Fingers crossed.

hi there, really sorry that you are suffering, i have had two m/c and I know there is no point taking another preganancy test.
A girlfriend of mine had same symptons as you and she had a DD eight months later, all perfect. Internal scan only way to know for sure but hositals often relunctant to do this before eight weeks, just tell you to take it easy - not much help. Fingers crossed for you. P x

If it is a m/c at 4+2 it's going to be like a normal period. A scan won't show anything at this early stage. You can go to the gp so they can record in your notes you had an m/c but they can't do anything it about it. Because it's so early your hormone levels will probably drop quickly so you not not have a bfp if you tested now. On the other hand you could still be pregnant so maybe test again in a week and if you have a positive ask for a scan at around 6 weeks when they will be able to see something on the u/s. Good luck.

ok. I will make a GP appt tomorrow. Unless I go into Ostrich mode and try to ignore everything, which would not be unusual...
Bleeding is slightly less heavy than normal AF. Also it is much brighter red in colour.. I have had cramps and backache tho which apparently aren't good. I would only be just over 4 weeks pg, so it is very very early -we'd just started celebrating the bfp when I went to the loo and discovered bleed.. At least I haven't had very long to get used to the idea of being pg

goingfor3 - I posted before I read your msg - thanks that is really useful. I don't like going to the dr's much (nothing personal, just one of those things) so I think I'd prefer to leave it if there is nothing much they can do at the mo

Spink, sorry to hear your news .

Please go to GP, it is important that it is recorded that you are m/c as investigations will only be undertaken after 3 - hopefully this won't be necessary - sorry
