Hello everyone,

I am a 20 y/o woman with PCOS and have been on a new (for me) birth control for roughly six months now. I've been taking birth control since the age of 12 and this is very different for me. For those who aren't aware, PCOS causes hormonal issues or imbalances and infertility issues among others. In my case, without birth control, I cannot have a period. Seriously. Anyway, I've looked around and felt this was a good place to ask.

My period being late is normal, anywhere from 4-14 days if I miss even a day of birth control. In this instance, it was 7 days late; however, was heavier than normal and only lasted 2 1/2 days with spotting two days later. During this time (even now, since the 10th) I have had debilitating cramps throughout the day. They come and go, and are always there after a meal. For me, the shortest I've ever been is 4 days, with minor cramps, and I rarely ever have spotting. This entire thing is abnormal and slightly concerning.

The only real answer I get is implantation bleeding - my doctor I luckily got to see today even said it during our small talk. I know people would say just take a pregnancy test but I'd like to take one when I'm sure it'll be 'yes or no.' Due to circumstances with PCOS and just having a perceived short period, when would a good time be to take/get one if anybody knows? Should I just take one now and if it's negative, wait a few weeks?

Any advice or words of confirming would be good, even if it is just comparing it to one's own experience. Thank you.

How many days past the supposed implantation bleeding are you - my understanding of your timeline isn't clear? If it's more than a week past what might have been implantation a sensitive home pregnancy test is going to be extremely accurate.

The supposed implantation bleeding began on the 10th and ended by the afternoon of the 12th with light spotting on Saturday. My period was supposed to have happened on the third. So yes, today (17th) is exactly a week from the 10th (last Tuesday.) Based on your comment (AsSurprisedAsYouAre), a home pregnancy test would work right about now if it was what I am assuming it to be.

I don’t think there is much real reason to suspect it was implantation bleeding. It doesn’t fit the usual description, you’re on birth control and you would be able to test positive for certain a week after it.

If it was implantation bleeding then you might estimate you are 14-16dpo. You would get a positive now for certain if you were.

Thank you, I was hoping there wasn't but I wanted to check to make sure. Don't really have any leeway financially right now to pick up a test until next week so I wanted second opinions. I'm aware my mother had gotten pregnant on birth control, which was another reason for my suspicion.

You could go to a walk in/sex clinic to do a pregnancy test and ask questions?
It’s free in the UK.
Otherwise next week will also be accurate if it was implantation bleeding.
