Hi guys

So got a print out of my last blood test, turns out my TSH is 3.6. I've seen a few threads on here suggesting it should be no higher than 2.5 for TTC

My issue is my doctor has said that it's fine and no action is needed.

Was anyone else in the same situation? How did you get your GP to agree to alter your dosage and aim towards 2.5?

Any advice is appreciated!!

Hi my TSH is varies between 3.3 and 4 when I’ve mine tested. Doctor said it was normal as well and shut down the discussion.

I’m sorry I have no advice on how to get them to prescribe anything as I didn’t get anywhere! I think If I’d been referred, it might be something the fertility clinics look at as they are more specialist.

Have you had any other tests? How far down the road have you gone?

Hubby and I have been trying for 19 months and technically there’s nothing wrong apparently. We could have been referred but chose not to as I don’t want to do IVF.

Hi,

Yeah that's the problem I've been having. I've read that TSH should be no more than 3.0 during pregnancy and when I was pregnant mine was 3.6 and sadly ended in MC.

So far haven't had any other tests yet, I know my body can get PG but really do believe my TSH not being in that 2.5 range is what's messing things up.

I think I'll have to delve into some research and try printing some stuff off for my GP to take in my next app!

Wishing you luck in your TTC journey!

Have you told them you're TTC? And explained the research you've done showing lower TSH is better for conception and baby? Seen another GP?

I won't bore you with my thyroid history but if you've done all that then tbh my main tip would be to see a private consultant and get them to advise what your ideal TSH should be and prescribe whatever dose of levothyroxine. You can then take that back to the gp and they will take you seriously. It shouldn't be like that I know Angry.

My GP does know I'm TTC but so far I haven't explained the research mainly because it took me so long to actually get a print out of my results in the first place as I just kept being told 'oh they're normal' Angry

I'll have a try explaining the research to GP, if that doesn't work I'll try a different GP and then if all else fails I'll deffo try a private consultant! Definitely shouldn't be like that I agree! I think GPs just don't necessarily fully understand that NHS range for 'normal' isn't exactly optimal and can still cause symptoms!

I've heard this time and time again! I lost pregnancies due to TSH of 4. 12 weeks on levothyroxine and I fell pregnant, all going well. I've posted on many frequent threads on this board about optimal thyroid levels for TTC, there have been loads in the last 6 months!

The Thyroid boards on Health Unlocked can offer good advice if you post there, many experts. Some source their thyroid meds elsewhere.

Good luck !

Hi, picking up this thread as I am exactly the same position. My TSH results are 3.88 but free T3 and T4 are normal and I am having regular periods so the specialist is reluctant to put me on Thyroxine at this stage. However we have been TTC for 9 months with no luck and all other tests (both DH and me) are showing as everything is normal so wondering if this is why.
Specalist said 5/10 years ago TSH of 2.5 was optimal if TTC but now latest research/studies show that 3.5 is also ok… lost, confused and worried!

did you all have regular periods with TSH levels closer to 4?

7Worfs · 20/09/2022 18:54

I have Hashimotos and know from an endocrinologist that if you TTC you’ve got to aim for TSH around 1.0
Outside of TTC I need it lower than 2.5 or I feel dreadful.
Tell your GP that he either needs to work with you, or refer you to a specialist endocrinologist.

ER12 · 20/09/2022 19:28

Thank you for your reply. The above advice r.e 3 - 3.5 being ok when TTC was given to me by an endocrinologist!
I don’t have any symptoms/ feel fine and have regular periods so not sure if that’s also why he is saying this?

are your periods still regular when your TSH goes above 2.5?

7Worfs · 20/09/2022 20:13

I’ve maintained mine below 2.5 for the last 14 years but yeah, periods were always regular, unconnected to my TSH.

3.5-4 would be impossible for me, I’d have panic attacks and impending sense of doom daily…

Phoneshea · 21/09/2022 08:12

Hi since posting I eventually fell pregnant after 2 and a half years of TTC and she’s 10 months old now and I’m pregnant with the second baby. So I’m not sure where that leaves the argument for TSH levels as mine were on the higher side. I did have regular periods too.
good luck to you all.
