Progesterone on NHS - anyone been prescribed?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone on here has been prescribed progesterone during early pregnancy on the NHS?

I know there are many studies surrounding it, and apparently not enough evidence to support it, but looking for first hand experience of ladies who have been to recurrent miscarriage clinics, or infertility clinics etc.

Thanks

I have, after my 3rd miscarriage xx

ineedanotherholiday · 09/03/2020 19:33

Yes I was provided by consultant at rmc after third miscarriage. Not sure if it's what worked but I am now 38 weeks pregnant.

LunaNightSky · 09/03/2020 19:42

I work for recurrent miscarriage service . Our consultants prescribe progesterone pessaries up to 12 weeks I believe. The ladies have scans every other week to monitor the progress of the pregnancy.

Hi ladies, thanks so much for responding, really great to know that they do!! @LunaNightSky I presume this would be following blood tests showing low progesterone?! Thanks x

Yes @ceebee21 all of our ladies have bloods and a scan prior to their consultation and are prescribed based on a low result.

I begged for some after low hcg levels. Not necessarily the science behind it (loads of people told me if the pregnancy was going to work or fail it wouldn’t make a difference), but I felt through my own research (And the fact plenty of clinics do use it) it was worth a go. My pregnancy was ultimately successful but obvs it could’ve been anyway.

ceebee21 · 11/03/2020 20:09

@LunaNightSky hello, sorry to ask you work related questions...but I had mu referral through for an appointment next monday. I have now received a letter just saying due to a clinical review, your appointment has been cancelled. Another appointment is no longer required.

Is this usual? I would understand them re arranging etc, but just to say no longer required?! X

Hi @ceebee21 that's no problem at all 😊

That doesn't sound right unless the hospital you are under is closing clinics due to the risk of Corona

Did your GP refer you through the gateway e referral service? Sometimes the call centre may book you into the wrong clinic and once your referral is triaged by the consultant we move it to the correct one. It may also depend on the clinics criteria for how many miscarriages a patient has had, age, reason for referral.

I would give them a call today to see what's going on. Hope this helps!

ceebee21 · 12/03/2020 07:35

@LunaNightSky thanks so much. Will try calling my GP first then the clinic if no answers! Xx

@LunaNightSky, I realise you work for a misscariage init so know about that, but do you know if progesterone is prescribed for women with low progesterone but not necessarily recurrent miscarriage?

(Bloods back, progesterone “unusually low” with the doctor pulling a face. She wanted the test redone before discussing any next steps. I’m not sure if I’ve conceived or not, but my LP is usually 7-10 days, so I wondered if there’s no time for implantation..... wondering what she might suggest)

ceebee21 · 13/03/2020 14:48

@crazychemist do you know what your results were?

I done private bloods and mine were under 30, so cannot guarantee ovulation?!

OP posts:
LunaNightSky · 13/03/2020 15:36

Hi @crazychemist do you have any underlying hormone issues such as thyroid problems, diabetes or any endocrine issues? From what you have said it could be low due to this, can you ask for bloods to check these? If it is one of these then I believe they would
prescribe.

I hope they get to the bottom of it and you can get what you need x

ceebee21 · 13/03/2020 15:58

@LunaNightSky spoke with my GP - they have re referred me to an Endocrinologist for my Hashimoto's... hopefully they will be able to help. x

Yes I have. I was prescribed cyclogest from the min I found out I was pregnant right up until 32 weeks (I had low progesterone which caused my miscarriages and continued to take it as my cervix was funnelling so it keeps it more stronger if that makes sense?) without it, I wouldn't have my DS with me right now. It absolutely works (in my case anyway)

crazychemist · 17/03/2020 15:38

@LunaNightSky sorry, missed your reply for some reason. Nope, all my blood tests were fine apparently, except for the almost zero progesterone. Theoretically I am having another blood test this month to confirm, but as lots of non-essential medical appointments are being put on hold I guess I’ll just have to wait. Bit glum about that.

Beau20 · 17/03/2020 18:46

@crazychemist you are just like me! My progesterone level was 13 and gp said deffo ovulation as if you hadn't ovulated progesterone would be almost none-existent. I also hade a short LP so I'm doing the bloods again tomorrow to see. I'm was wondering about progesterone for LP defect too...

Beau20 · 17/03/2020 18:47

@crazychemist zero progesterone would mean you haven't ovulated at all...

MuchTooTired · 17/03/2020 18:59

I was prescribed progesterone on the nhs after my ivf. I stopped (well, tapered off of it) from 12-14 weeks.

crazychemist · 17/03/2020 20:23

@Beau20 I know. But all other levels are normal e.g. LH and such. I had a pelvic scan and one ovary may not be functioning but the other had healthy follicles. So I’m hoping that the low progesterone is because I didn’t ovulate because it was the dodgy sides turn.... so maybe the other one is ok. But I get similar results in terms of home LH tests every cycle and I do always get a temperature rise.... “LP” always seems very short no matter what. My GP said I should have another test this cycle to see if it is the same. But I get the feeling that’s not likely to go ahead in current circumstances.
