TTC but I don't have periods

This may sound like and odd one but let me explain..

I've just been diagnosed with PCOS and one kind of blocked Fallopian tube. To top it all I don't get periods.. but I have had tests and I am ovulating and everything is 'normal'.

My question is, is anyone else had anything at all similar. How do I know when I'm ovulating? I'm currently waiting on my next hospital appointment to discuss the next steps but me and my partner desperately want a baby and are trying. Feel like we are just trying and will get no where if we don't know when I'm ovulating.

Hi OP, sorry I have no experience of what you're going through. Just wanted to suggest cheapie ovulation sticks off amazon or eBay. You can get something like 100 for £5.
This way it won't cost you the earth and you can pee on one everyday to see if they get darker.

Hi OP,

Do you not have any periods at all or are they just extremely long cycles with only light periods/spotting? I would ask them to explain really clearly what they mean by you are ovulating but you’re not having a period as that doesn’t seem to make sense. Of course I’m no doctor but the way my fertility consultant explained it, a period is the release of an unfertilised egg and the lining of your womb every month. If you're ovulating but aren’t pregnant then the egg remains unfertilised and would then be released during your period. If you’re not having a period then what’s happening to the unfertilised egg? It’s possible to have a period and no egg, as you still have to release the lining of the womb but I don’t understand how you could have an egg and no period?

I think doctors can sometimes say things are normal when they’re not. I have letters from my consultant where I am told my periods are normal and all my blood tests are normal despite my cycles being 80+ days long and blood tests confirming that I do not ovulate properly and that because these things are wrong they want me to start fertility medication. I’ve also had the blood tests approximately 10 times and each time they’ve been ‘normal’ yet have shown there’s a problem. How can that possibly be normal then? 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ I have just done my first cycle of metformin and clomifene so will find out in a couple of weeks if it’s worked.

I didn’t have any success with the ovulation sticks as I don’t ovulate properly but you could try them and see if you do get any confirmation of ovulation? You could also try taking your temperature (BBT) and recording it on an app. That might give you an indication of when you are ovulating. If you are ovulating, you should be able to clearly see a pattern of lower temps before ovulation and higher temps after. Annoyingly you won’t be able to tell you’ve ovulated until after, but it might give you an idea if you actually are. Plus it’s more evidence to show at your next appointment. That’s what I did.

Good luck OP. I understand how it feels to be frustrated and not knowing but hopefully you will get answers soon.

Thanks Potty, I might buy some, I suppose it's worth a shot.

Leo, thanks for your reply. So I should of said that I was on Norethisterone which forced me to bleed every three months for about 5 days. They put me on this to try and make me have regular periods, but this never happened. They kept me on this for like 5 years with no change and I never had a natural period.

I was also put onto Metformin about 3 months ago. I need to ask more questions and find out what is really wrong or what my options are. I'm not even sure what their reason was for putting me on Metformin if I'm not having period at all 🤦‍♀️

Poor you that sounds so frustrating. They put me on metformin because they wanted to shorten my cycle down to as near 28 days as possible. I’ve had one round and it was 35 days which was amazingly short for me and now I’m on my second round of metformin with clomifene as well. I’d imagine they put you on metformin to see if they could make you have a 28 day cycle.

I think you really need more answers though as I doesn’t sound like they’ve told you much at all and I agree you need to know what’s wrong and what you’re options are. It sounds crazy that they just left you on Norethisterone for 5 years without investigating further.
