Has anyone tried “superovulation”?

Hi everyone

I’m 38 and have been TTC for 18 months. Initially conceived quickly but had a missed miscarriage last March at 11 weeks, since then nothing. All hormone levels fine, regular periods, ovulation etc.

My doctor is recommending that I undergo SuperOvulation, whereby you are stimulated to produce more than one egg per month which makes it more likely that you’ll get pregnant. However I can find relatively little info about this online - there are a couple of webpages it doesn’t seem especially talked about. One of the main risks appears to be of multiple pregnancy although I would personally not mind having twins.

Does anyone have any experience of this process? I am living overseas (although British) in a country where all healthcare is run privately and so would appreciate a second opinion. The doctor is convinced that it’s low risk with a good chance of success, but I’m wondering, if it’s so effective, why haven’t I heard more about it as a fertility solution?

Just to reiterate, we fall into the category of “unexplained infertility” - ie everything with my husband and I is fine, we just don’t seem to be conceiving.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Do they mean Clomid? I had 6 failed rounds, although it supposedly works in about 80% of cases where there are ovulation issues. There are nasty side effects and an increased risk in cancer, so it needs careful consideration.

There are plenty of Clomid threads on the infertility boards.

Thanks for your reply. I don't know the name of what he's proposing, but having looked up Clomid it looks like the one.

From what I've read, it seems that this treatment is more often used for people that aren't ovulating at all, or who are ovulating irregularly - whereas I am ovulating each month already.

So I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has tried this, or heard of this being tried when you are already ovulating.

It should be used only in cases of no or irregular ovulation, but it does seem that it can sometimes be prescribed as a "fob off" drug before moving onto IVF. Chuck a prescription at it for a few months and hope that conception happens in that time. If an ovulating woman falls pregnant, it may not necessarily be down to the Clomid.

Do you have the option of IVF? In the nicest possible way, age is a big factor in the success rates so I would probably want to get a move on with it.

Thanks for the advice.... I've been told that IVF is unlikely to work as I have a low AMH. I haven't done much research yet into whether it's worth trying anyway. I'm moving back to Europe in a few months so may hold off all these options until settled with a new doctor... hmm.

Hi there, we did 9 rounds of clomid before ivf. We are unexplained. They tracked my follicles whilst on it. I ovulated multiple eggs which gave us a better chance but unfortunately it didn't work for us. It's worth a try perhaps if ivf isn't an option to you? Good luck x

Hey! So my sister got given a drug called femara which is like clomid but with better success rates I think? She only did one month but the doctor where she lives (overseas) gave it to her to make her hyperovulate. Basically it just gives you a higher chance to release 2 eggs in and around the same time so yes you have a higher chance of concieving. I know that your cervical mucus can dry up on the drug so I would suggest drinking plenty of water and taking primrose oil if you decide to do it :)

Thanks ladies! Glad to hear this is something a bit more conventional than I'd thought. I think I'll give it a try... from a mental perspective at least it's hard to sit back and do nothing when there's something out there that might work - even if it doesn't, I'll know I've tried everything I can...
