Ovulation pain or Mittelschmerz - what are your experiences?

Hi ladies! What are your experiences with pain before, during or after ovulation?
I definitely feel pain at O time and it coincides with positive OPKs.
But, what is that pain/ache in my back that feels crampy and like a stitch? It literally feels like the cyst which is about to burst! Or could it be the egg's already been released?

Good luck to all trying to catch that egg! 🧚🏻

I've been looking for a thread like this for ages! I get really intense pain every month without fail, usually switches sides each month too but not always.

EWCM usually around the same time too. It usually lasts around a day, sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with it.

I think it's most likely related to the egg being released & that's what causes the pain.

Stupidly, I assumed because I feel this every month it would somehow make me super-fertile...but I'm 14 months into this TTC malarky & had no luck yet!

Lisa127 · 14/02/2020 17:42

Hi @Marble20
Same, I get it really strong sometimes, feels uncomfortable to sit down or walk. Lasts a few hours. I can almost imagine the ovary expanding then popping!

I've been actively trying for about that too. Gets me down but not giving up!

Do you use ovulation tests?

Anyone else any crampy ovulation experiences?
Need some help pinpointing when the egg actually pops out, so we can DTD at the very best time!

I always had this, like a low down stitch on the side you ovulate. Dtd a couple days before got me BFP x

Lisa127 · 19/02/2020 19:20

Ah @Mollie3 thank you! Going to have to try and get a few me deeds in before my predicted O on Sunday then x

No worries, I think us girls who have this (don’t think it’s too common) although it can be annoying and painful at times, have an advantage in TTC! Good luck x

ChanklyBore · 20/02/2020 21:22

Awful. Every month, sickening low down pain, random as to which side. Can last as few as six hours but never longer than twenty hours which is the only thing that makes it bearable. I try not to take painkiller but sometimes I have to for this.

I once spoke to my GO about it but he said it was a myth Hmm

I did have an advantage when TTC though, I only consciously tried for a baby twice and the first time I conceived the first month. The second time I conceived in the second month. Before that sounds too easy, I have also had several miscarriages so I tended to not actively TTC as I found it easier not to engage with a possible baby until late in pregnancy. But when I did decide to go for it, and actively tried, I got pregnant easily when DTD with mittelschmerz as my only guide. Good luck

Hugtheduggee · 20/02/2020 21:43

I get this. I actually found it unhelpful when TTC, as who wants sex when you have stomach cramps?

WinterCat · 20/02/2020 21:49

I get this as well and after several appointments was told it was a result of endometriosis. It definitely happens at my ovulation time though; I used to be fanatical about testing and checking, so no doubt.

Mollie3 · 20/02/2020 22:09

@Hugtheduggee totally agree with u always before when ttc it is painful during x

Lisa127 · 21/02/2020 07:28

@ChanklyBore sorry to hear of your losses 😔

Did you DTD before the cramps, or during, or after?

OP posts:
Lisa127 · 21/02/2020 07:29

@WinterCat oh sorry to hear that. How was the endometriosis diagnosed in the end? X

museumum · 21/02/2020 07:33

I have this really quite bad. Conceived by dtd the morning after the worst of the pain.

HarrietM87 · 21/02/2020 09:07

I have ovulation pain in the few hours after I ovulate. I know this because I’ve had scans etc and the last few cycles have had ovulation induced via trigger shot, so I know exactly when it’s happened. I get extreme sharp cramps from the side I’ve ovulated from which dull gradually. Usually lasts about half a day.

Lisa127 · 21/02/2020 10:30

Wow that's interesting. @HarrietM87 would you say it's a sharp pain or dull aching? 🤔

OP posts:
Lisa127 · 21/02/2020 10:31

@museumum so do you think the pain was before ovulation?

OP posts:
paintfairy · 21/02/2020 10:55

I get it sometimes. Not every month. Usually mine is on the right. I can have mild cramping or bloating too. So there are times DTD is the last thing I want to do. This month was one.
I also ovulation spot most months. But this doesn't seem to link with the pain. I've had spotting on months with no pain at all.

HarrietM87 · 21/02/2020 11:16

@Lisa127 it’s a sharp pain at first and then subsides to a dull pain. I get EWCM in the days leading up to ovulation and as I say the pains come just after I ovulate. Obviously you can get pregnant on the day you ovulate (my dr advises sex 2 days before, day before and day of), but if you wait for the pains to have sex you might miss out on some chances!

Lisa127 · 21/02/2020 12:51

@HarrietM87 thank you ☺️
I really feel I need to time this well. I'm expecting a positive opk on Sunday at some point.

Do you think it's best to wait for the Lh surge and then DTD, or just keep doing the deed everyday? We've tried DTD like, 3 days in a row and it doesn't work. This is TMI but on the third day, there isn't as much sperm as the first time, like its running out by then!

So, I feel we need a little build up first (but not too much) then time DTD right before ovulation. I'm thinking if I've got my timing right, we should DTD on Sunday morning.

Obsessed? Me? 🤦🏼‍♀️

Lisa127 · 23/02/2020 21:18

So.... also anyone have positive opk morning AND afternoon/early evening?

OP posts:
WinterCat · 23/02/2020 21:19

I get positive opks for up to three days.

Lisa127 · 24/02/2020 06:57

@WinterCat does that mean ovulation will happen 12-48 hours after the start or end of the surge?

OP posts:
KittyWindbag · 24/02/2020 08:29

I used to get it regularly for years but the last few months I haven’t and this is worrying me. Very hard to explain accurately. Like a kind of bloated, almost constipated feeling. Was uncomfortable to sit down sometimes. More painful than my period cramps. Now I miss it because I think it was helpful in trying to conceive my first baby, although I agree with a previous poster about not always wanting to DTD when it was so painful.
