Hi, Sorry to jump straught in, I'm new here. But I'm after some advice...PLEASE!

I had my Merina out 4th August, coz the Progesterone wasn't working properly, and because of that, we thought we'd try for another child, we were gonna next year anyway. I didn't have the 'big' bleed I've heard so much about. I had 3 days very light bleed on the 11th August. So now, 13 days later, I'm confused because I'm now bleeding that heavy it's scaring me. Is this that 'heavy' bleed? Or could it be an early miscarriage? I've had them before, but aboout 6 years ago, before my son was born, so I can't really remember....

Sorry, for the depth of detail.
Hugs to all

Hi Timelordess
I'm afraid I have no input or advice to offer, but I thought I'd give you a bump and welcome you at the same time.
Don't worry about jumping straight in with all the details. That's definitely the best way around here.
I hope an expert will come along shortly to help you!!

Is it possible that you are just having your period. I didn't have a big bleed after mine was taken out. In fact I didn't even feel the doctor take it out. However, when I did get my periods they were much much heavier than they had been when I had the mirena in, or before I had ever had the mirena.

Timelordess · 29/08/2007 08:22

Thanks RuthChan...very much appreciated. And also thanks Sofia, makes me feel better already. I didn't have bleeds at all with the Merina in. It was pure heaven

Hi Timelordess,

I had my Mirena out on 27th June and then had a light bleed on 3rd July (only 2 days). Then I had the mother of all periods/bleeds 2wks later (an 8 day shocker!!).

After a 32 day cycle I have just had a normal (in terms of amount of blood etc, sorry if tmi) period of 5 days.

Your pattern seems similar to mine so I wouldn't worry too much at the moment.

I didn't have periods either on Mirena, so it comes a bit of a shock!!

hope this helps

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 11:55

Mirena

chocolatemummy · 29/08/2007 11:59

Oh god, this is not the thread I needed to see.
I have just had urgent gyny referral after extremely painful and heavy periods ever sincer I got pregnant with dd (now 3) and ove the last 18 months its just got ridiculous.
I came on last week after only 10 days break and went to the dr's, whilst in waiting room I got up and had bled all over the seats, blood all down my trousers, so humiliating. Reception had to call dh to bring me some clothes, was seen by two GP's together who thought I was having a miscarriage at first.
They mentioned a mirena coil a year or so ago but I was put off it by horror storires and now they are talking hysterectomy!!! I am only 32 and although not sure I want anymore kids, not sure I don't want anymore kids either! but appreciate I can't carry on like this

claricebeansmum · 29/08/2007 12:02

I have had a Mirena for 10 years but was thinking about having removed at the end of this year to give my body a chance to get back to normal before menopause but now it looks mightily unattrractive...I did not know that the bleeding was so heavy when it was removed. Why?

chocolatemummy · 29/08/2007 12:03

I guess many people have the merina coil to tackle very heavy bleeding and when it comes out you just go back to normal?

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 12:05

A GP is not the person who should be dealing with what your treatment options are for this, CM, hence, why you need to see a GYN.

It needs to be determined what is causing the massive bleeds before any treatment options are suggested.

There are a myriad out there besides hysterectomy.

If you are completed your family, there are two alternatives to hysterectomy which work for some patients whose bleeding is caused by fibroids and who don't respond to or cannot be treated with other alternatives.

See what the GYN says and if all they say is coil or hysterectomy and don't do a series of tests to find out why this is happening to you, get a second or third opinion.

chocolatemummy · 29/08/2007 12:13

well at the moment IO am on three sets of tablets to keep things calm until appointment come through, I def don't want hysterectomy at this age. The coil is looking unavoidable but will see what my other options are. Had scans for fybroids but it was clear, it was kicked off by my pregnancy and although stopped whilst in later pregnacy and breast feeding has gradually got worse and worse ever since.
I spent over £20 on prescriptions the other day, god knows how much on packest of the biggest, thickest pads I can find and trow loads of knickers away when I have a period, I really resent paying for this crap

lulumama · 29/08/2007 12:17

you need to see a gynae

an endometrial ablation might be an option, rather than hysterectomy, which is very radcial

lulumama · 29/08/2007 12:17

also if you buy a pre payment certificate for your prescriptions, you will save a fortune

ronshar · 29/08/2007 12:17

It is quite normal to have a heavy bleed post coil removal, as long as it stops. You need to have one normal cycle as a bench mark, also makes it so much easier for dating the baby. dont be surprised if it takes a little while before you get pregnant. It can take a few cycles to get back to normal for you. Hth.
Chocolate the doctors treid to get my mum in for exactly the same reason. She resisted for years, had the laser treatment and has been a different person ever since. The doctors always go straight for a hysterectomy as it is the easy option for them not, you though.

expatinscotland · 29/08/2007 12:17

Have another scan. They should run some hormone tests as well - thryoid, etc. Sometimes the fibroids can be on the outside or they can be pretty deep in the lining/muscle of the uterus.

My best friend's were only found during a lap & dye procedure. Since she had a strong family history of ovarian cancer and was long finished with childbearing, she went for the hysterectomy, although hers was done through keyhole assisted vaginal procedure.

My sister had laser embolisation for fibroids, which worked wonders for her.

BUT, she did not want any more kids. She had her last at 29 and was happy with that - she has two - and her husband had already had the snip right after their second was born.

If you are overweight, you may find that losing weight and/or exercising helps as well.

chocolatemummy · 29/08/2007 19:41

Thanks for all of that,
I am not really overweight, 5ft 5 and weigh 10 stone?
I think will ask about the laser treatment and will not be having hystrectomy whatever, I want to wait until I'm 40 before that I think.

I had my mirena out after 5 years in feb (was due out in may but had complications) my bleeding stopped after a few days and was not much at all really.

3 weeks later i had a really heavy bleed that lasted for 9 days and i couldnt cope so i got the doctor to give me tablets to stop it. This went on for months.. i came on at work and had bled all over my chair, my dress down my legs everything thought i was heaomeraging (sp?) so went home and sulked. I think a lot of it is the mirina is used for heavy periods aswell and when you get so use to having none or just the odd bit of spotting every few months when you go back to thinking you're body has just spat out all your blood it does stress you out a bit.

It should calm down after a few months, if not they can give you tables.. tranxenemic (sp) acid.. and they work wonders you take them for the first 4 days of your period and it does something to help combat it.. they were my life saver

metbjb · 11/10/2007 14:40

Hi
I had the merina in for two years and luckly for me had no side effects at all - in fact before having it my periods lasted up to two weeks & were v heavy the merina gave me light 4 day periods. However I have it taken out three weeks ago and after 2 days of light bleeding I am now feeling pregnant ie neausea(?) tiredness constipation etc. I did have un protected sex with husband but can't beleive would be pregnant already - to soon to test but guessing its just a hormonal change - anyone else experienced this after removal?

Worried.

andysmummy · 13/11/2007 12:49
