Successful pregnancy after D&C or medical management

Hi!
Im going through a miscarriage when I got to know on my 12 week scan on 2nd December that the baby hasn't grown past 6 weeks and the heartbeat is uncertain.
They've called me for a follow up scan on Monday but i dont think there is any chance as I've also had some red discharge since. But nothing heavy or cramps at all..

Im making my mind as to what to choose. I can go for natural but it has been 6 weeks since the heartbeat stopped and i didnt know at all and even now the process seems to go slow so im thinking to go for D&C so that i can move on.

My question is how successful is it to get pregnant after D&C? I've read that there are equal chances in any method you choose but just afraid of scarring or anything though they are rare.

Any mommies here who got successful in conceiving after one mmc and how long after d&c did you wait as it takes time to heal?

I've one daughter thank God and this sadly was my first mmc. My love and support to all mums who went through a miscarriage it's devastating 💔

@Bee1710 Hi lovely. I'm so sorry to read your news, sending you a handhold through this tough time Flowers

I had a MMC - found out at 10 weeks, baby's heart stopped beating at 7 and a half weeks. I chose the medical management route as I too had heard of scarring with D&C. I think it's just personal preference but I was told the risks are lower with medical management. As it goes, miscarrying was terribly painful for around 24 hours, then was actually ok.

We are TTC again now (I'm on CD1 today) so I can't say how successful TTC is after medical management. Thinking of you x

Chanel05 · 06/12/2019 12:48

@Bee1710 sorry to hear of your mc ThanksI went for surgical management and the right choice for me. The physical recovery was much quicker than the mental recovery. I had my erpc on May 2nd and I've been ttc ever since with no luck yet, also back on cd1 today! In retrospect I should have given myself the first month after my mmc as I drove myself absolutely insane with stress waiting for af which took more than 6 weeks to arrive.

Bee1710 · 06/12/2019 12:49

@danielasummer sorry to hear about what you went through too.. It's heart breaking.
Did you experience a lot of cramps with it and were you in hospital or did they send you home? I've another daughter to look after at home so don't understand what to choose.

@chanel05 so sorry to hear you went through this too 💗
How long was spotting afterwards and are your period cycles back to normal now?

danielasummer · 06/12/2019 12:58

@Bee1710 thank you, it truly is heartbreaking. I will say though that time does make things a little easier and although it's still painful, it has lessened somewhat and is more manageable.

I had bad cramps during the evening I took the medication but the next day I was fine. I only went to hospital to pick up the medication and for the consultancy appointment which was around an hour, to ask about my symptoms, mental health, support systems around me and to explain what would happen etc. Then I went home, took the medication (pessary), had the cramps, bleeding (there was a lot, but not enough to go to hospital with bad blood loss), had lots of chocolate and a hot water bottle, pillows on the floor, sick bowl (the pessary can make you feel sick), my mum and husband there for support and had lots of showers so I wasn't stuck on the toilet all night. I also had lots of sanitary towels; I wore the ones for night-time for about a week incase I leaked. I also took the week off work.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. Happy to help you through this awful time x

Chanel05 · 06/12/2019 12:58

@Bee1710 I think I bled for three weeks as it took that long to get a negative hpt. My cycles have been all other the place! I had a 43, 39, 35, 36 and 35 day. The cycle I've just finished was my first normal one that I've had since before the mmc where I ovulated on cd17, my usual day.

Bee1710 · 06/12/2019 13:03

@danielasummer oh virtual hugs to you. You are strong. Did they afterwards scan you again to check for any remaining tissue?

Also is your cycle back to normal now?

@chanel05 good to know your cycle is back to normal now! I hope you conceive soon with a healthy baby and this is all in the past then💗

Not entirely relevant, however I had a surgical d&c under general anaesthetic approximately four years ago. Had the implant immediately after which was taken out earlier this year and fell pregnant on the first cycle.

I appreciate you are looking to TTC sooner than I was, however hopefully it gives you some comfort that I didn't have any long term issues.

Bee1710 · 06/12/2019 13:22

@alarae what do you mean by had the implant earlier this year and was taken out?

How long did it take for you to conceive again. Happy to know you did soon :)

My DH wants to try sooner I'm thinking to wait a little. Let's see how it works out.

@Bee1710 thank you lovely. I really think experiences like this make you stronger. Things that used to matter to me/stress me out absolutely do not matter anymore. Puts things into perspective.

I asked to have an ultrasound to check everything was out - that was nearly 4 weeks after I took the pessary. Luckily they were training monographers so were quite happy to scan me, otherwise I think I would have gone private just to make sure. It was totally worth doing as they also checked if I had any follicles on my ovaries (I did) and that there were no cysts etc and that everything looked healthy. Whichever route you go down, I would 100% recommend a scan.

My first AF arrived today since the MMC (first period since July!!) so nearly 6 weeks since I took the medicine.

How are you feeling? Thinking of you and sending you strength x

Bee1710 · 06/12/2019 15:48

@danielasummer thank you so much 💗 so basically a scan once the bleeding stopped or the tests came negative?
Asking cs is address all my concerns to them on Monday

OP posts:
danielasummer · 06/12/2019 18:21

@Bee1710 no problem x I booked in for the scan the day I got a negative test - I had to ring the EPU to let them know I had a negative so they could discharge me, and that's when I enquired about a scan. Seriously ask the consultant as much as you can at your appointment but I also recommend either bringing someone or making notes as from experience it's quite an emotional appointment and if I didn't bring my lovely mum with me, I'd have forgotten everything that was said (it was all a bit of a blur). Wishing you a restful weekend ready for Monday x

Puppydogg1 · 06/12/2019 18:37

Hi lovely, so sorry about your sad news.

I had a missed miscarriage with my first pregnancy a few months ago. I went for a scan at 10 weeks and the heartbeat had stopped around 8 weeks.
I chose to have a D&C, I couldn't face the medical management route but I understand everyone is different. This was the beginning of September.

Bleeding after the D&C was heavy for a few days before it eased for a further week. I had my first period following the D&C in October which was heavier and more painful than usual. And following that one normal period I am now 8 weeks pregnant, so no problems TTC after the D&C.

Lots of love to you, whichever option you choose it is an awful experience, be kind to yourself. Xx

Bee1710 · 06/12/2019 21:40

@danielasummer thank you for sharing this. Yes my husband will be there with me. Hopefully they arrange a scan for me too afterwards.

@puppydogg1 so sorry to hear about your mc. Congratulations on your pregnancy so happy for you!
Did you take any preconception tablets and use preseed or anything?

OP posts:
Puppydogg1 · 07/12/2019 12:10

@Bee1710 Thank you!
The first time we were TTC I used OPK's the Clear Blue ones, I also was taking the Pregnacare before conception tablets and switched to the Pregnacare pregnancy ones when I got a BFP.

The second time round I didn't use OPK's or any pre conception vitamins, just DTD when we felt like it and was more relaxed about it and left it up to chance. Then just started taking the Pregnacare vitamins when I got my BFP.
Never used preseed but have seen on a lot of these threads that people have success with it.

Thank you @puppydog1 hope it stays well for me too xx

Hey OP. I had surgical management back in 2013. Physically, it was really easy although emotionally awful at the time. I was home and well that evening. Very little pain, very light bleeding. I had an unusually heavy period a few weeks later (2 or 4), then found out I was pregnant again 4 weeks after that. DD is 5 now.

I hope it goes smoothly for you. Best of luck Flowers

danielasummer · 13/12/2019 14:40

@Bee1710 Bless you, wishing you all the luck in the world for Monday x Really hoping you can start the year in a mindset of moving forwards. Miscarrying is such an awful thing to go through and I think about what happened to me every single day :( but it will get better in time.

I'm good thank you. Starting SMEP this cycle so fingers crossed. Keep us updated x

Bee1710 · 13/12/2019 15:33

@QueenWhatevs so happy to hear that. Thank you for sharing. I'm so worried that I conceive again soon healthily. Thank you.

@danielasummer that's good to hear. Hope it goes great for you. All the best. Pls keep us updated too.. I'll msg my update on Monday
