PCOS, metformin then pregnancy?

Hi all,

I would really like some advice.

I have had pcos since 18 and went through a year without having periods. I went on metformin and I managed to get my periods back. During the contraceptive pill I stopped taking metformin. Adter coming off the pill I started metformin again, after 5 months my period started after a year. Now I am two days late for my period. I am starting to think either: my periods have messed up and it will be a trip back to gynae again, 2 - maybe they will start but much later, 3- could be pregnant.

Is there anyone else who has gone through something similar?
Or any advice please Smile

I have PCOS too, it took some doing but I have three children. The first too I took Clomid to be able to conceive. My son took only 2 cycles but my daughter took 18 months. Something in my body was kickstarted by all the Clomid then when my daughter was just under a year I found out that I'd conceived naturally. That was a shocker! It definitely can happen, even with PCOS

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 19. Absent periods, multiple 'cysts' on ovaries, wildly out of whack hormone levels, the lot! Was told back then that I would need Clomid if/when the time came that I wanted to start a family.

Long story short, I'm now 35 and 10+5 pregnant with my first. I conceived naturally and thanks to digital OPKs, it didn't take long.

Just goes to show, it is possible! X

PCOS - year of Metformin - one cycle of clomid to conceive DD1 - then conceived DD2 naturally with very short gap! Had regular cycles since.

Thanks all for your replies
@OnlyToWin Did metformin regulate your periods? When did they decide you needed clomid? After how long?

Thanks so much

Hi, no I did not have a single period whilst on Metformin. It was after taking it for just under a year I was prescribed Clomid. I had to take a drug to generate some bleeding if I recall then once that had stopped I took the Clomid. Prior to that I had not had a period for over two years and prior to that I have no idea as I was taking the pill for a couple of years. I had always had problems with missed periods or very heavy periods though and was diagnosed with PCOS at 19. I always knew I would need help conceiving so went to the doctor after a year of trying and got my BFP about 18 months later. With DD2 I must have ovulated then conceived straight away as I had no period after giving birth! Hope it all works out for you OP.

The metformin did make me lose weight prior to conceiving, although tbh I was not overweight and even losing more weight did not trigger periods starting though must have helped in some way as they firstly recommend weight loss for those with pCOs.

The consultant did believe that I would conceive easily on metformin but clearly my body needed that extra boost to ovulate from the clomid.
