Hi guys I’m new here and looking for some advice. I had my usual break from my contraception in October however started taking my pills again 9 days after my break instead of the usual 7 which is what the pills suggest. Me and my partner did the deed (sorry don’t know what other way to put it! Haha) on Halloween and I proceeded to take my pills again as usual 2 days later however last week I had really bad cramping and light spotting for a day and it hasn’t come back I’ve been experiencing period like pains, severe mood swings, I cried at a tv show over something very stupid🙈 which isn’t like me at all, I’ve been urinating a lot more and eating a lot of crap and feeling slightly nauseas although I’ve put this down to my frequent use of zapains due to my chronic pain, I was just wondering if this could just maybe be signs I need to change my pill or could it be something more? I would take a test however it’s not been that long & don’t want to panic myself over nothing as I’m not yet due my break from my pills, thanks for any advice 😀

I was on the pill with #1 and #3 - take a test and regardless of outcome go see your g.p

dementedpixie · 18/11/2019 16:55

So you had 9 days without the pill instead of 7 so were 2 days late and missed 2 pills? Yes there is a chance of pregnancy if you didnt take other precautions

ArabellaDoreenFig · 18/11/2019 17:28

I fell pregnant on the pill, it can happen.

Milly2980 · 18/11/2019 19:44

Yep it was either one or two days past it But nothing over 2 I’ve done it quite often as I forget after a busy day at work etc so didn’t think much of it

Missing 1 pill is ok. Missing 2 or more pills is not ok. NHS advice:

What if I have missed 2 or more pills?

If you have missed 2 or more pills anywhere in the pack or started a new pack 2 or more days late (48 hours or more), your protection against pregnancy may be affected.

You should:

  • take the last pill you missed now, even if this means taking 2 pills in 1 day
  • leave any earlier missed pills
  • carry on taking the rest of the pack as normal
  • use extra contraception, such ascondoms, for the next 7 days

When you come to the end of your pill pack, after missing 2 or more pills:

  • if there are 7 or more pills left in the pack after the last missed pill– finish the pack, take your 7-day pill-free break as normal, or take your inactive pills before you start your next pack
  • if there are less than 7 pills left in the pack after the missed pill– finish the pack and start a new pack the next day; this means missing out the pill-free break or not taking your inactive pills

Youmay also needemergency contraceptionif you have missed 2 or more pills in the first week of a pack and had unprotected sex in the previous 7 days.

Ribeebie · 18/11/2019 19:48

Yes it can definitely happen. You can ovulate as early as the 8th day after stopping your pill. If you are late starting you're pill it also takes 7 days for it to start working again. Please do a pregnancy test. If it's negative repeat it in a week and make sure you use your first wee of the day to do the test

MissCherryCakeyBun · 18/11/2019 19:56

My 28yr old daughter is proof you can get pregnant while on the pill.
I was taking it every day and I was not unwell or taking other medication.
Unfortunately other than not having a uterus or not having sex all the other methods of contraception / avoiding pregnancy have a failure rate even if it is very very small it's there

dementedpixie · 18/11/2019 19:58

Not taking it for 2 days is asking for an unplanned pregnancy though. If you're going to forget to take it maybe you should try a different method of contraception

EarlGreyT · 18/11/2019 20:01

Me and my partner did the deed (sorry don’t know what other way to put it! Haha)

Um, how about had sex which is what it is.

firsttimebuyer20 · 18/11/2019 20:03

Agree with @dementedpixie.

It's not really 'falling pregnant on the pill' if you aren't taking the pill correctly IMO.

I second trying another form of contraception if you regularly forget to start it again when you should.

Nestofvipers · 18/11/2019 20:05

@dementedpixie
Missing 1 pill is only ok IF that doesn’t involve extending the 7 day break to more than 7 days. If you extend the 7 day break at all then you’re at risk of pregnancy.

dementedpixie · 18/11/2019 20:10

Not true if you read the link

dementedpixie · 18/11/2019 20:12

Sorry didnt give a link but this is from NHS too:

What if I have missed 1 pill?

If you have missed 1 pill anywhere in the pack or started a new pack 1 day late, you're still protected against pregnancy.

You should:

  • take the last pill you missed now, even if this means taking 2 pills in 1 day
  • carry on taking the rest of the pack as normal
' take your 7-day pill-free break as normal, or if you're on an everyday (ED) pill, take your dummy (inactive)pills

You do notneed to use extra contraception.

muddledmidget · 18/11/2019 20:14

After the 7 day pill break hormone levels have reduced to the point of ovulation potentially occurring, extending the 7 day break means ovulation becomes very likely and pregnancy can definitely occur. It is partly for this reason that the 7 day break is no longer recommended but GPs prescribing hasn't caught up with the new advice yet

puds11 · 18/11/2019 20:17

Sorry but how do people not know this stuff! The only way you don’t get pregnant if you are able to reproduce is by not having sex Confused

EarlGreyT · 19/11/2019 06:54

@Milly2980.
however started taking my pills again 9 days after my break instead of the usual 7 which is what the pills suggest.
It is not what the pills “suggest”. Restarting the pill after a 7 day break and not extending it is what you have to do for the pill to be effective. It’s not a suggestion, it’s an instruction which if you ignore you’re st risk of pregnancy.

If you’re extending the 7 day break on a regular basis, this is a possible pregnancy waiting to happen. It’s not “getting pregnant while on the pill” as you’re not actually taking the pill properly which is what you have to do for it to be effective contraception.

The only way you’re going to know one way or the other though is to do a test.

Milly2980 · 19/11/2019 18:41

Right there’s no need for people to be rude I asked a question there’s no need for you all to be stuck up arseholes, I got my answer fair enough, I’m in a loving long term relationship with my own house and income so it’s not like it would be the most irresponsible thing, I very often have a longer break than usual as I take my pills every 6 weeks rather than the 3 weeks as directed on the packaging. I find it disgusting that this is a forum for people to ask questions and get advice yet I’ve been patronised and spoken to in a not very nice tone just because you think your all better than me, get a life your all clearly bored housewives :)

Wonkydonkey44 · 19/11/2019 18:44

I suggest if you don’t know how to take your pill correctly then you should look at alternative forms of contraception Grin regards a bored housewife Grin

Shookethtothecore · 19/11/2019 18:45

My “on the pill can’t be pregnant” is asleep on my shoulder. And I took it religiously

PotteringAlong · 19/11/2019 18:45

No, no one is saying that they’re better than you, just pointing out that if you’re not taking contraception correctly then you cannot be surprised if it fails.

JustMe9 · 19/11/2019 18:47

You can definitely get pregnant on the pill. I did and I didnt even miss any pills!!! Congratulations!

Kenworthington · 19/11/2019 18:48

Wow op, how rude are you? Of COURSE you could be pregnant, you’re not taking the pill properly!

EarlGreyT · 19/11/2019 21:42

No one has suggested if you are pregnant it would be irresponsible. That isn’t what you asked. You asked whether there was a chance you could be pregnant which of course there is.

I very often have a longer break than usual as I take my pills every 6 weeks rather than the 3 weeks as directed on the packaging.

I still don’t think you get it. Whether you take the pill for 3/6/9/12/however many weeks, if you have a longer break than 7 days you’re running the risk of pregnancy. Whether or not you took several packs back to pack extending the 7 day break at all risks pregnancy unless you use alternative contraception until you’ve taken 7 pills correctly.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/11/2019 21:48

At the risk of getting a telling off from you OP, if you’re not going to take the pill properly, there’s no point taking it at all.

(runs and hides)

PS not a bored housewife

PPS it’s you’re
