Folic acid not agreeing with me

Hi all. I have started taking folic acid recently and I am finding it’s upsetting my stomach. I took it around a year ago with the intention of TTC but then put those plans on hold due to job uncertainty, anyway I had the same issue then, it’s making my stools looser and way more frequent. Has anyone else experienced this? I know it’s important to take it :(

Not exactly the same but I find that iron supplements make me extremely nauseous...

Maybe look at combination supplement see if the dose is lower may not effect you as bad

I’m taking the ones combined with vitamin D this time but it’s still the same. I’m not sure what the answer is!

The coating on most shop brands made me throw up. I ended up paying £1.50 for a massive tub from local sure start centre as they had no coating and then I was fine x

Hmmm so I don’t feel nauseous just my stomach ends up upset.

I had that when I first started taking it. I suffer from IBS and lots of different things I eat can trigger it. Was about to go and see the dr as I didn’t know what to do, couldn’t put up with it but knew how important it was that I took it. It ended up just going away. Maybe my body got used to it or something. I take it just before I go to bed so maybe that helps as well. Maybe try for a little longer and then speak to your dr about it?

chipsandpeas · 30/10/2019 22:45

it may be the vitamin d thats causing your stomach upset - i felt ill when taking vit d

try buying a folic acid supplement on its own

Loaf90 · 30/10/2019 22:48

Ah, this is just your introduction to your body never being your own ever again when there's even a hint of a pregnancy. Folic acid making you feel a bit sick will soon be the least of your problems!

peachypetite · 31/10/2019 23:43

I don’t feel sick loaf. I have the shits. Really helpful post!

You could always pop in to your local chemist and speak to a pharmacist. They'll either recommend different coated tablets/liquid form may have a different effects. Or will recommend a bulking agent to make it more solid Grin

Bol87 · 01/11/2019 13:01

I ran out of mine & popped to the pharmacy to grab some. All they had was some vegan, gluten free variety that were a tad more expensive. I don’t know if something like that might be worth a try? Something in the tablets must be bothering you.. maybe just experiment with different types?!

Phoebesfleas · 01/11/2019 13:06

Folic acid and all supplements upset my stomach so I got most of my intake from a huge bowl of special K and marmite toast daily, my midwife had no problem with this and neither did my belly!

peachypetite · 01/11/2019 17:09

I’ve tried boots and Superdrug and both have been bad news :(

@peachypetite
I had that problem as well and took me awhile to realise that the tablets were actually making me feel worse (which stopped when I stopped taking them).

I'm now taking pill that are like this 💊. "plastic" coating with powder inside and I can't feel anything 😁 Looks like it was just the hard little pills that didn't agree with me.

Mseddy · 03/11/2019 20:21

I'm on a much higher dose of folic acid (ivf) and it makes me feel nauseous so Ive started taking it at night so I sleep through the symptoms. Maybe taking it at night and then being less active when your asleep might help your stomach settle? Or maybe you'll shit the bed, I guess it's a risk! Anyway I mentioned to someone at work that the folic acid wasn't agreeing with me and she said she had had the same, so she switched to the more natural form folate and thay agreed with her much more. Maybe try that?
