Test left and checked later?

I'm 9dpo and took a clear blue early test this evening and waited 2 minutes for the result. Nothing showed so threw it in the bin, just walked by the bin and saw a second line so got it out. There is a clear visible line, double checked the instructions and it says to wait 3 minutes! I just want to double check that a negative test wouldn't show a positive hours after being taken for some random reason?

I should add that I have had a false positive years ago (did a test as I was poorly with odd symptoms, showed a faint line, retested and they showed negative as did the doctors)

Clearblue are notorious for this!!!! I'd get a frer

Maltay · 25/10/2019 22:25

Actually I think a lot of them do go positive after a while so you're supposed to read them within 15/20mins. Best do another to check x

Mustrryharder · 25/10/2019 22:26

Ok won't get my hopes up then! Are frer, first response tests? As if so I can't find them anywhere so it will be a case of waiting for my period and then using a normal test

Do another one in a couple of days. It's probably just the evaporation line but there's always a chance the second line was too faint to see after 2 mins.

ValancyRedfern · 25/10/2019 22:51

Even frer get evap lines if you leave them too long. Never trust a line that appears after the 3 minutes.

CL1982 · 26/10/2019 13:27

I am going to go against all wisdom here and say that actually the evidence is it often (not always, please don’t yell at me everyone!!) doesn’t matter if you go back to the test later. If the line has colour it should be a positive.

Before I get ripped apart this came from a post I read written by a doctor who was fed up of his wife worrying about evaps- he worked with pregnancy test companies designing tests on the science end. He point out the chemicals on the test lines are designed to react to HCG ONLY and if it is present the reaction is to show the line in the colour designated. If ANY HCG is detected, it will react with the chemicals and turn the line blue or red and will continue reacting days or even weeks after the test has dried. His point is if you have HCG in your urine you will get a coloured line. An evap line is always grey and will never have colour. It’s easier to mistake a faint positive on a blue line test than on a red.

So I guess my take on this is, ok, it’s not a definite positive but it’s not a negative either if it has colour and to test agin. Which is what all other ladies said but I just thought that info was worth sharing :D It made a lot of sense when I read it. I need to find the source really 🤔

Thanks everyone, I've bought another test and will do it in the morning! I will report back :)

@Mustrryharder did you retest?

claireb707 · 27/10/2019 09:13

@CL1982 I agree there is definitely a lot of myths around evap lines - I've seen the same post a line is a line...

CL1982 · 27/10/2019 10:22

@claireb707 it makes sense when you think of the science.... 🤷‍♀️ but some tests def go bonkers. I guess there are always faulty ones.

Found it The myth of "Evap lines"

claireb707 · 27/10/2019 10:47

To add, I am a scientist and what he says is true....

Mustrryharder · 27/10/2019 11:47

Yes retested with a digital and it said not pregnant :( Presumably it was an evap line but it was very distinct.

OP posts:
sarahc336 · 27/10/2019 12:14

But the digital ones require the highest level of hcg so are least sensitive, I'd have tested with a normal test, preferable one that you can use before your period is due in case your testing early still Smile

Michellebops · 27/10/2019 14:20

At 9/10 dpo you're testing too early and especially early for a digital.

Remember you've only just ovulated a little over a week ago and if pregnancy is possible once the sperm and egg meet it has to travel to the correct spot to implant in your uterus which can take a few days.

Wait until your period is due or late to do a test.

MindyStClaire · 27/10/2019 14:24

Can you order first response online? They're cheaper there anyway. They're the only ones I trust tbh.

I'd think similar to above - if the line has colour, it's positive. But it's hard to tell the difference between faint blue and grey.

claireb707 · 27/10/2019 14:29

yes too early for a digital, try a frer

Mustrryharder · 27/10/2019 17:16

I will wait for AF and report back!
