Hi @Luckymagpie - we're just bumping this for you and hopefully someone will be along soon with some useful advice.

Best of luck. Flowers

@Luckymagpie, my DP had a vasectomy reversal in July. Happy to share all the details with you. I researched for 6 months, and we chose such an a fantastic surgeon.

It had been 15 years since his vasectomy, and we knew the chances weren’t great. We’ve just had a semen analysis, and follow up with the surgeon and he said based on the results, he would have no idea that my DP had ever had a vasectomy or reversal.

Sperm count, motility, and morphology are all very high, and he says we will have no trouble conceiving.

I would absolutely go with him. We’ve heard stories about couples who went to other surgeons around the same time as us, who haven’t had great results.

Our surgeon has such good results, because he has national referrals for complications or failed reversals sent to him.

The key thing is testing fluid for sperm during the operation. We spoke to 3 other surgeons who said they didn’t do this, as it was costly and unnecessary. We decided that we’d rather pay more, and just pay once. We are seriously so glad that we chose our surgeon.

Basically the standard vas to vas join has the best results. The more complicated to epididymis has less good results, but is often required if the original vasectomy was more than 6 years ago.

We paid for the more expensive, complicated operation, ie vas to epididymis. However, on testing the fluid, the surgeon found sperm present. Therefore, he managed to do the vas to vas join. But as he explained, if you don’t test for sperm in the fluid, you have no way of knowing that you are joining up two “live tubes”.

Basically we paid for the long complicated theatre time, in case we needed the vas to epididymis surgery. We ended up with the simpler vas to vas, but didn’t mind that we’d paid more, as we knew our results would be better with the vas to vas join being done.

We took the view that paying for the long theatre time was a good insurance policy, so that the surgeon could just do whatever would give us the best chance on the day.

For consideration OP. We didn’t find out about the growth of possible scar tissue reducing fertility after a reversal op. Wherever you approach to have the surgery do ask them about the impact of scar tissue build up following a reversal.

Derbee · 23/10/2019 04:43

You will see prices from about £2500, but having researched so much, you get what you pay for. Our choice was vas to vas for £3570 or vas to epididymis for £6100.

The main difference in cost was paying double the theatre time, the anaesthetist for double the amount of time, and the microscope for checking sperm etc to be in the operating theatre.

One of the other price differences with our surgeon compared to others, is that he does 16 stitches per tube. The cheaper surgeries do 4 stitches which obviously takes less time, hence the price. From research, this seems to allow sperm to “leak” from the tubes back into the body, and not effectively come out during ejaculation.

Sorry to give you so much info! I was desperate for info a few months ago, and posted here but didn’t get much helpful real advice.

Not sure if I’m allowed to name the surgeon here, but feel free to PM me. I sound like an advert probably, but we had such a fantastic experience with him. He’s really lovely, and we’ve had better results than we ever could have hoped for.

@WeThreeKings was this a problem for you? Our op was end of July, and our semen analysis end of September. What sort of time scale does scar tissue tend to build up? Do you know?

beckymum · 23/10/2019 23:03

My husband had a successful vasectomy reversal 2 years ago ; operation was in October, I conceived on 1 Jan. Happy to share name of surgeon on PM :)

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 24/10/2019 07:13

Yes, I’m afraid so. A semen analysis reflected a reduction in volume and we also then became aware of a fragmentation issue (but that may not have been linked). My understanding now is that there is an golden year’ after the reversal op before possible issues with scar tissue emerge. This may not be an issue in your case (if your husband heals well) but it is worth asking A trusted specialist Who knows your case I think. We didn’t realise about this golden year and expected things to happen naturally. We’d probably have had more, and more planned sex if we had. Wishing you good fortune OP.
