Overweight in pregnancy

I am 5 ft 4 and weigh 13 st/ 83kg I have been told by my Gp that I need to loose weight before conceiving. In order to bring my BMI down. Now I found this quite rude as I don't look overweight; I wear a size 12/14 I'm active and have a healthy balance diet. What do you think I should do ladies ?

@Rams26 - hello!

I'm overweight, was for both of my pregnancies (that were both complication free) and nobody throughout each mentioned my weight.

Obviously, it's better to be a 'healthy weight' but I personally didn't want to wait as it can take time to get pregnant etc.

Main thing is you're active and have a good diet x

But ultimately you are overweight, even if you do fit the social norm

Well personally I’d lose weight. Obesity and being overweight has been shown to be as cancerous as smoking. Better to be a healthy weight and around for your child.

If the doctor has told you to lose weight I’m afraid you need to take their advice. It’s more difficult to conceive when overweight so even if you don’t feel like you are, it will help your chances and your health going forward

I'm 5ft3 and 74kg pre pregnancy, BMI was overweight. The doctors did not say anything about my weight when we started TTC initially. After 5 months i luckily ended up pregnant and am now 25 weeks, without any issue so far! Overweight pregnancies can be uncomplicated and very straightforward!

At 5'4" and 13st your BMI is in the obese range, even if you don't look it, so I think it's reasonable of your doctor to mention it. It might be worth having a look at your diet and exercise regimen in order to give you the best start to a pregnancy. It can't hurt

I was the same height and weight as you when I fell pregnant first month of trying. My BMI came up in my booking appt and I'm high risk with that, age and complications during my previous birth.

I'm now 30 weeks and nothing more has been mentioned this pregnancy.

I brought it up at my 28 week appt that I've actually only put on 4kg during the pregnancy and the midwife said it didn't matter they didn't look at these things.

I'm not giving you an answer I'm just giving you my experience with having the same stats as you do not sure if it will help...

PS and anyone medical who has ever given me weight advice has always been much larger than me!

I have been very stupid in the past and never used contraception with my last two partners and never conceived. I have recently lost 2 stone on a drastic fad diet with no carbs and eating only 500 cals a day in the space of 2 months and then ended up getting, due to believing I couldn't get pregnant didn't use anything with my current partner which sounds horrendous (because it is) when you've not been together more than 2 months but genuinely believed because I have PCOS and never having concieved before I can't get pregnant but due to the weight loss I became pregnant straight away, I'm 94kg and I'm 5ft 5 I'm classed as obese but I feel I don't look it and even my midwife was shocked at how much I weighed but so weight loss for me even though I'm more than you weigh after the weight loss really worked.. Although being told I'm obese is extremely offensive haha
