Winter sun and Zika whilst TTC

Hi all,

We’ve been trying to plan a holiday for December to get some sun as I miscarried on our UK summer holiday this year so it wasn’t much fun! All of the places I can think of that would be hot in the winter are a risk for zika and I’m really struggling to decide what to do. I’m hoping I’ll be pregnant by December but if not then I definitely wouldn’t want to wait after we get home as is advised, and if I am then it’s obviously risky.

I’m going to discuss with my GP but I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience/wisdom or destination suggestions on here first. Thanks xx

I'd say if you want to discuss it with your GP then go ahead

If you're happy to take up time that would be better spent on someone who needs their GP's attention then yeah, go ahead. Just don't ever complain when you can't get an appointment in the future.

Halloween Hmm yes, that's the issue causing problems getting appointments- people asking perfectly relevant preventative health-related questions. Not the thousands of no-show appointments every year. Or the massive real-term cuts to healthcare. Or the rapidly increasing population which provision has not been made for.

No, it's just the people asking about Zika. And by asking about it herself, of course OP loses the right to complain about the destruction of the NHS by our own government. Makes total sense. Fully agree with you.

How about Singapore?

If it helps CDC and WHO have downgraded their warnings about Zika virus.

@RolytheRhino people making appointments to see their GP for non-medical reasons is very much part of the reason that those who are ill can't get to see the GP. I am a GP. At least a tenth of my patient contacts each day are for those who didn't need to contact a GP. Within our practice, that's at least a day of GP time wasted. All the information the OP needs is online and if she wants to be 100% safe then she'll have to do without her winter sun, or delay conceiving. What is the GP going to add?

We went to a country with Zika on our honeymoon. At time of booking the country was zika free!
I had wanted to start ttc whilst on honeymoon.
When we returned we saw the doctor and also I'd read online. We're recommended to wait 6 months as pp said for the mans body to be free of the virus.
I was so eager to conceive but waited the recommended time and glad I did as have a healthy boy now.
I don't know what the stats/risk is, id imagine relatively low, but I just couldn't have lived with it if I'd found out that there was something wrong with my baby that I could have prevented.

Unless you are really pushed for time I would say enjoy a lovely sunny holiday and then start trying again 6 months after, it's not as long as it seems.
Good luck OP x

What about all those women that live in zika countries?

claireb707 · 29/10/2019 07:59

@fairybeagle it's now recommended 3 months not 6

@GrapefruitGin they have that risk, although as you cannot have zika twice most are probably immune but there is large quantities of babies born with microcephaly such as those that hit the news a few years ago in Brazil
