TTC - PCOS - no periods

Me and my DH are looking to ttc in the new year, and I'm wanting to start preparing in terms of taking vitamins etc soon.

My problem is I have pcos and at the moment i havent had a period since May (so over 4 months since my last one).

A while ago I went to the doctors about something related and asked at the time and he advised that until I have 3 periods or less in a year they wont help me... so how am I supposed to ttc if I'm not ovulating/having periods?

Anyone been in this situation before or know where to start? Anything that can be done to induce a period when the doctors wont help? I've read about soy isoflavones (sorry not sure on spelling) but read they're not suitable for people with pcos.

The only things you can do at home are myo inositol and control your weight. Bmi should be in the normal range (which is obviously more difficult with pcos). A low gi diet can be helpful as well, and could help with weight loss.

And I'm surprised they've said they won't help as you already have a diagnosis... check your ccg guidelines at fertility fairness.

PCOS diagnosed here. Definitely try Myo inositol!! I'm only coming up 5 weeks from stopping the pill and not had any bleeding (not even a withdrawal) but my GP have already referred me for a scan - although I am having painful cramping too.

What I will say is that it can happen. When I was first diagnosed I was told I would never conceive, so I was on no birth control. I conceived after four week of being with my partner (now of 9 years!)Wink

It can happen 😁

Thanks both! Wow after 5 weeks? I havent had a period for months and on cycle day 143 but when I spoke to the dr he said until I'd had 3 or less periods in 12 months then wouldn't help :(

Myoinositol it is then - does either of you know if I can take other vitamins at the same time eg folic acid or vitamin d?

Thank you!

I've heard so but maybe see a pharmacist to double check x

Of course!! You should always take folic acid (and vit d) when ttc. And I strongly suggest you check your ccg treatment criteria on the fertility fairness website, as I've never heard what your doctor is telling you (I've been an extensive researcher of infertility).

Thank you- I'm wondering if it's because I told him I hadn't started ttc yet and was just getting ready to so he perhaps wanted to kick my problem down the road if you see what I mean

I will definitely look into that tho, thanks so much I havent even thought to look into that

Hi @Conceptionhelp I also took myo inositol for my pcos, within 3 months of taking it I conceived my DS! I took it in powder form with folic acid in it also. Taking again now in the hope of conceiving DC2! Good luck :)

Conceptionhelp · 24/09/2019 22:28

@Laur89 oh wow that is so good to know!! Its such an exciting thought that I'm getting ready to ttc! Fingers crossed for you for dc2!

I have PCOS and very irregular periods. When I was first diagnosed in my early twenties I didn't have a period for about a year. Then about two years ago in my late twenties I didn't have one for six months. I then had maybe two or three, again quite irregular, then had irresponsible unprotected sex (not actively TTC), and fell pregnant. Obviously falling pregnant shouldn't be so much of a surprise if you have unprotected sex, but I'd kind of assumed I would be less fertile because of my lack of periods. Evidently not.

This probably isn't much use to you because I can't actually recommend anything, but it might be helpful to know it's still possible to get pregnant despite going for a long time without periods.
