Ovulation blood tests

Hi all,

Quick background info - 28 Y/O had been on the pill for 10 years but stopped taking in October 2018, periods came back straight away but are slightly irregular (28-31 day cycle). Been using at home ovulation tests and had variable results, basically was convinced I ovulated one month but not the next. Had the blood tests done this month to measure FSH/LH and progesterone and results came back inconclusive, but I was convinced this was a good month! So now I’m feeling really disheartened and unsure where to go next. When I rang up for the result the receptionist didn’t know whether the tests need repeating or not, but day 3 will be Saturday for me so I need to know ASAP really!

Has anyone been/in the same situation? What did you do/what are my next steps?😕

Get hold of a bbt thermometer (shows to 2 decimal places), and start charting your temperatures. I use an app called Fertility Friend. You also put in info such as cervical mucus and ovulation tests.
It will show if you're ovulating, and if so, when. You can then make sure your next progesterone test is 7 days past ovulation, or you can show your doc evidence that you don't ovulate.

Thanks for the responses and the love, just a quick update... I had the tests repeated this month, and also tried to use the clearblue digital ovulation tests and for the first time had both high and peak fertility (four days of high, peak day 14). However, I had the progesterone blood tests yesterday at 4:45pm and had a text from the doctors before 9am this morning saying I needed to make an appointment to discuss the results. Rang back and the receptionist said that my results were ‘abnormal’.

Firstly, I was surprised the results came back so quickly! Last month I waited 8 days for the results, and this time it was less than 18 hours, most of those the surgery was closed.

Secondly, the ovulation tests suggested that I had ovulated? I know they’re not perfect, but it was the first time I’d had ‘high’ fertility and was feeling optimistic 😕

Now feeling dejected and waiting for the next step.

Ovulation tests don't work for everyone. For those with PCOS for example, you can have false positives. Meaning that the body gears up for ovulation, there's a surge that the test picks up but the body doesn't release an egg after all. The "period" you might get after that is the uterine lining shedding when progesterone goes low late in the cycle (according to my doctor at least)

I had what I thought was regular cycles, but according to multiple 21 day blood tests, I'm not ovulating 😫 and progesterone is abnormally low.

I hope you get some more info to work with once you see your doctor and they help you figure this out! 😊
