Missing coil ?

Hi all.
My husband and I are wanting to try for a baby. I had a smear test a couple of weeks ago where they then noticed they couldn’t see my coil strings . I got sent for an internal ultrasound that same week, and the coil is in place safe and sound, not moved at all . So I went back to my drs today and the nurse still couldn’t get hold of my strings . She tried with a swab etc but said she’s not allowed to use the forceps as only drs can do that. So she said she’s going to see if she can get a dr to come and try from another practice and that they’ll be in touch , if not I need to be referred to gynae. I’m a bit anxious as I had psyched myself up for the successful removal so we can start trying .
Has anyone else experienced this ? If so did you have to wait long to be seen ?
I’m holding on hope that the dr can successful retrieve the strings with some tools or something . Thank you

Mine went wondering, caused discomfort and pain, strings couldn't be found. Had an internal scan at local hospital to locate, I asked and they removed it there and then. This was within a few days of going to gu clinic. Possibly due to the pain I was in and the fact it had moved I was classed as higher risk?! Have heard horror stories of them perforating the womb so maybe why they acted fast.
Maybe a local sexual health clinic will be more experienced?

Mine also went missing and sent for a scan to confirm still there. I was overdue for renewal and given two choices by my obgyn either removal in the office which is apparently very in comfortable or surgical with GA. She recommended the latter which I did. Same day procedure and took it easy for a couple of days. Slightly different in my country as GP's don't usually do any coil removals and only s few put them in.

My strings also disappeared. Had a gynaecologist appt and she dug around a bit and pulled it out there and then. Didn't really hurt much at all. I'm amazed they offered this under general anesthetic. It was literally a sharp pain for 3 seconds and a few days of period cramps.

Thanks ladies . So it sounds like I won’t be waiting too long . The dr called today and said I need to go in tomorrow to discuss pregnancy care (I have epilepsy so they like to monitor medications in my blood etc before, during and after pregnancy). They can’t do it at the GP so they’ll be referring me . I didn’t realise only some doctors can perform removal . I just don’t see where the strings could’ve gone ?! I’m quite anxious as it was all going so well lol!
I don’t want to be going under GA, if I can help it . They’ll be a bit reluctant to do that with my Epilepsy I think ...

My consultant told me that sometimes the strings are cut short and either retract behind the cervix or are tucked right into the cervix and nurses don't like to root around for them.

CouscousEvaporator · 17/09/2019 20:12

I think it’s quite common, they just go back up into the cervix. They can use a “string retriever” to unhook them and pull them down and remove the coil the normal way. Or if that doesn’t work the dr at the hospital will try to pull the coil via actual coil not the strings.
I had it done, was fine, way better than it being put in!!

Thanks ladies . When I had my coil fitted it didn’t hurt much, I had cramps after but it wasn’t an unpleasant experience thankfully . The nurse at the time (four years ago now), said I had a long cervix (7.5 inches) and that she needed to make sure the strings aren’t cut too short . So I guess over time it’s risen up a bit ! I honestly would not have noticed if it wasn’t for wanting it out because I’ve had no discomfort or anything ! So weird ! I’m thankful it’s not moved so like you say , the strings must’ve risen up. I don’t think I will have one again 😬
