When to remove coil for TTC?

DP and I are planning a baby for next year. We're planning to marry early next year (once he's actually proposed lol) and then we'd like to TTC ASAP.

I'm debating whether to remove the coil to try for a honeymoon baby. When I remove the coil, do my period dates remain the same? If so if I remove it mid cycle then I should have my period just before our wedding and should be fertile whilst on honeymoon.

I know the odds of conceiving straight away are slim (considering I'm 33) but I just wanted to check whether removing the coil will change my cycle and what other peoples experiences are after removing the coil then TTC.

Is it a copper coil or Mirena?

I conceived straight away( literally the next day by the dates ) at 36 so be prepared for that .. mine was the copper coil though so zero hormones to clear from my body if that makes a difference .

I conceived straight away both times when it was removed (copper); cycle just carried on as normal. Was in my early/mid 30s.

33 is hardly that old!

I had the Mirena and its been 3 months of ttc and hasn’t happened yet. I was hoping it would happen straight away but I guess everyone is different. I’d say definitely get it removed a bit before with the Mirena as there are hormones in it your body could take time to regulate. Sounds like the copper coil may be different though.

I think as with all this stuff there isn’t a right or wrong answer, I just personally wish I’d got mine out sooner and had time for my cycles to sort themselves out.

I was advised by my practice nurse that as soon as a coil is removed you are fully fertile.

It’s the mirena coil so I guess it might take longer. I also had endometriosis and scar tissue removed in April so no doubt that’ll cause issues.

It’s a double edged sword as I ideally don’t want to be pregnant before we marry but equally I’m worried it’ll take years.

@ButterflyOne1 have you thought about using a contraceptive app or condoms for a while? Not sure what other opinions are on here but I’ve been using the natural cycles app to track mine. It’s also licensed as a contraceptive app to help people prevent pregnancies by using bbt to track cycles. I’m using it on the plan pregnancy mode but you could use it on the prevent one till you were married and then at least you’d have a good knowledge of your cycles once you were ready to ttc.

ButterflyOne1 · 31/08/2019 07:14

@Banoffeepie91 I actually had n't thought of that. How funny I didn't consider it. Thanks so much. I might remove it at the beginning of the year now.

@ButterflyOne1 as with most natural methods it’s not as affective as the coil for contraception so you need to use it knowing that there is a chance you could get pregnant. Or make sure you use condoms as well. Also the app when you first get the coil removed will need time to get to know your cycles so if you’d be really against getting pregnant before you are married then I wouldn’t recommend it just in case. For me as I’m TTC i’ve found it really useful and would consider using it in the future to prevent pregnancy if I ever needed to.

I conceived the month after I had my Mirena removed - this happened for two pregnancies. The first time I was 29 and the second time I was 32.

I could give yourself plenty of time to regulate after the coil removal. We thought it would take a few months but ended u being about 9 or 10 before any real cycle, if you can be safe, I’d have it out at least 6 months before xx

Some women find it takes a few months for everything to settle down and their cycle to go back to normal, but for some women it returns straight away. If you can I would aim to have at least one cycle without the coil before starting TTC, as then was you know when you last period was which is handier for knowing your due date etc, but it's not the end of the world if you conceive straight away. It's worth bearing in mind though that the current recommendation is to start a folic acid supplement three months before you stop using contraception, so that might be something to consider now, if you plan to get the coil removed in the new year.
