Could Fluoxetine harm conception?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this. It's our first month trying to conceive and I'm currently on day 29 of my cycle and 2 days late. I got a BFN yesterday morning but my doctor prescribed me Prozamel (Fluoxetine) and today is day 4 of me taking it. My doctor said it was fine to take while TTC but after doing some reading I'm a bit worried. Has anyone any experience of taking this drug and did it affect your cycle?

@PNBB Hmm my doctor told me not to TTC when taking this! X

Rosieposy89 · 26/08/2019 17:49

I don't take this one, I take mirtazapine 15mg and a low dose of quetiapine -25mg and we are TTC. My GP and psychiatrist are happy for me to stay on them as the risk of mental illness would be greater to baby. My meds are associated with a minimal risk to baby but it's all unknown as it's not ethical to test on pregnant women. I wouldn't worry too much, people get pregnant on ADs all the time and depression can be really harmful too x

Thanks for your reply HJWT. I'm going to test again in the morning fingers crossed I will get BFP and then I will stop taking it. I'm just hoping it's not the tablets delaying my cycle

I was on fluoxetine when I conceived, I was slowly coming off them at the time and had stopped taking them by the time I was 9 weeks pregnant. DS is now 22 months old and all is ok.

Thank you so much for your replies that's very reassuring. I have anxiety and OCD more so than depression and I've never been on any medication before now. SureTry did Fluoxetine delay your cycle at all when you started taking it? I want this BFP so much. The only symptom I have is a dull ache in my lower right abdomen for about a week now.

I didn't notice any change in my cycle at all to be honest. The only time I was late whilst taking it was when I conceived.

I conceived twice on fluoxetine - they are 4 and 15 months now. Don't recall it affecting my cycles at all.

I can only tell you what my doctor told me, but Fluoxetine is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I've been taking it for 2 years and have a healthy 4 month old boy. Good luck with your TTC journey :-)

Thanks for all your replies. I'm 3 days late now and got a BFN this morning so I presume it's just the medication making me late. Do you all recommend Fluoxetine? Did it make much of a difference to your life? And have you needed it long term?

For me, a combination of fluoxetine and counselling has made a massive improvement to my life. The fluoxetine took about 5 weeks to really work so do bear with it. Just remember you WILL feel better; how your feeling now won't last forever. X

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 18:18

My GP switched me to sertraline when I was pregnant, said it was safe to breastfeed and conceive on that etc

MarshallMathers · 27/08/2019 18:19

but Fluoxetine is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It's not the safest of the ADs though, it could be worth switching once pregnant.

pooopypants · 27/08/2019 18:29

Fluoxetine turned my life around (pre kids), abusive relationship, lots of stuff going on etc. I wouldn't be where I am now without it, honestly.

I can't comment on it being safe in pregnancy but it can be very good. I've never found another AD which suited me like fluoxetine.

aintnutinchanged · 27/08/2019 18:45

My friend was on this all through her pregnancy (and an older mum for what it's worth) and has given birth to a perfect baby girl

PNBB · 27/08/2019 19:00

Thank you so much everyone you've made me feel much more positive about taking Fluoxetine. I've always been taught to get through things yourself and not rely on medication so it was the first time I've seen a doctor about it. I was still feeling unsure about taking it but I'm glad I joined this group now x

Sometimes doing it yourself isn't the answer we al need a little help sometimes
