TTC after c-section

I had my first baby in April - delivered by elective c-section. Due to my husband's age, we're keen to get moving on the second baby but we're unsure what the advice is about TTC after cesarean. We've read all different things and one doctor said wait 12 months while another said wait 2 years. It's all so confusing!

Would love to hear from anyone who had advice on this from their doctor, or experience of TTC after cesarean.

Thank you!

I had my DC abroad and in my system I saw the same private OB/GYN throughout. The advice was to wait 12 months before falling pregnant again. I got pregnant when DC was 16 months and had a normal pregnancy that ended in another c-section. OB said everything looks OK and if I want to have another it's safe to do so. But 2 is enough for me!

My IVF clinic refuse to do a transfer for 18 months after c section delivery but said with a OBGYN note they may reduce to 12 months

Definitely allow at least 12 months as your scar and muscles are going to be really weak and may not be strong enough to support another pregnancy if you don't give it time to heal

I had DS1 by emergency C in sept , fell pregnant pretty quick and had DS2 in Nov the following Yr. I did have a second c section, but planned this time, I was advised to have a second C as 1) I have big babies (10lb8oz the first one) and the small gap.

Thank you @Gruntvsgunt @itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted @edgeofheaven for your replies. Looks like we will have to wait 12 months to try - just hope we will fall pregnant quicker than we did the first time 😕

@mamavee just to clarify. I only have a 14 month gap between children, I didn’t wait a Yr z

Ahhh I misread it @Gruntvsgunt - ok food for thought.... think I probably need to see my own doctor and get a definitive answer for my own circumstances. Thanks for the reply x

I had an emergency c section in June 2013 and an ELCS in July 2014. Nobody had told me to wait and nobody blinked about the gap either. They were happy for another section (better than testing the previous scar). If you want to try, just do it.

I had an emergency c-section and was advised to wait a year. As with anything, the more time you give it, the better really.

I was pregnant again by about 17 months. I had no issues with my scar etc.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/08/2019 00:01

I had zero issues. It was actually a way better pregnancy for me.

Seems like there is no clear cut rule, everyone says different things.

Fwiw my doctor said to wait at least 12 months before falling pregnant if I wanted to have a vb this time. In her opinion falling pregnant sooner would be fine in itself, but they wouldn't recommend vbac so I would likely be booked for an elcs.

mamavee · 26/08/2019 19:58

Ah so @NoWordForFluffy @1300cakes is it more of an issue for attempting a VBAC rather than for the pregnancy itself? I've read about uterine rupture but I thought that could happen anytime. Such a minefield!

Yeah, I think it is the VBAC / rupture risk. Honestly, they couldn't have been less 'bovvered' by my second pregnancy if they tried!
