Periods & PCOS?

I came off the contraceptive pill over a year ago to TTC but only had about 3 periods in that time, and no sign of pregnancy.

I went to the doctor & blood tests showed low progesterone. The doctor has referred me but thinks it could be PCOS. I have a referral appointment in a couple of months.

Im on my period now and it's lasted for about 3 weeks and seems to be still going. Some days there is hardly any blood but then then other days there are blood clots and it's just generally a heavier period. There was also a lot of brown blood for the first week.

I had a period last month which was quite similar but lasted about 2 weeks. I took this to be a good sign as it's the most regular I've been for over a year.

Has anyone else had experience of periods like this? Will they just always be this way?!

It could be pcos... not sure what your bmi is, but some pcos symptoms improve with (responsible) weight loss. Is your bmi in the normal range?

Thanks for replying. I am slightly overweight, could do with losing about half a stone, which I'm working on so hopefully this will make a difference!

According to a gynaecologist I've been to several years ago (after a ~2 1/2 week period during which I felt completely drained of energy) I have PCOS and he prescribed progesterone to be taken every 3 months for 10 days each. My period then was normal in duration, but mostly stronger. I got it a few days after the 10 day progesterone intake and occasionally, but not often in between as well.

After I was out of the tablets (took them for 1 1/2 years), I've been to another gyn to get a new subscription and been told that they actually aren't meant to be taken for such a long time. I now haven't taken them anymore for 3 1/2. My period since then was quite normal most of the time in length and volume - normal in regards to how is was before I first had issues. Occasionally it's out of line - I had 2 consecutive periods which were like the ones you described. I think it was about a year ago. I feared it might stay that way, but then it went back to normal again. Sometimes they are a little longer than usual (7 or 8 days instead of 5), but it's hardly bleeding the last 3-4 days.

Thanks for your reply-that's positive to know yours did go back to normal.

It's very annoying as it's now really heavy again! Before I started taking the pill all those years ago, my periods were very heavy and would sometimes last for weeks and then would be non existent for months so I don't know why I expected it to be different when I came off the pill.

It's just really frustrating as we're trying for a baby now and it seems like this period will never end 😭

Well, currently it's normal, but as I said it kept changing, so I don't know how it will be. Also, I only get it 3-4 times a year, which I'm pretty pleased with (don't want to get it at all), but obviously if you want to get pregnant, that's not ideal.
