Fertility test results

Hello ladies. I am hoping people who know a bit more about this topic may be able to help me. I just did a lot of blood tests to check certain hormone etc levels to see where I might be fertility wise. The key result seems to be my amh which is 18.2 pmol - I am 40 and this seems to be an ok-ish result. All other results came back fine. At the moment I am not proposing to have any scans etc and have no idea about the quality of my eggs. I have been pregnant before (did not have a baby).

My questions are do you have any comments or insight into the amh result? And... the doctor said I am quite a few years off menopause but if then read an article online (why did I do that??) that said with an average result like that a women could expect to be able to have a baby up to the age of 40/41. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

There are many reasons I don’t have a baby yet and none of them happy ones. I am now very happy with a lovely man and we are moving in together soon. We have been together nearly a year. As a couple we are not yet at a place where we are thinking about having a baby and I definitely need more lead in time and to establish more trust and confidence before I could think about it - I guess I am thinking maybe in a years time when I am 41.

I am sorry - my questions aren’t very clear but I guess overall it is what do you think of my results and generally any advice? I am not going to freeze eggs as I don’t have the money and have been told it won’t be helpful at my age.

Thank you so so much xx

Your AMH is pretty good for you age - I'm 36 and mine is below average at 12.9

It's not an indicator of egg quality more how you might respond to ivf stimulation more than anything

I would say though not to put off having a baby if that's what you want - your fertility will be in decline even though you've had a good AMH test. Take ivf for example - someone below 35 years probably has 40-60% chance of success but over 42 years it drops to 2%

That level is counted as low (which is 3.08 - 21.97, so you are only just into low from satisfactory), but for a 40 year old that is great good.

As has been said, that only gives an idea of how many eggs you have, not their quality, which is the big thing as you get older.

Over 40 IVF success is lower and if you did need assistance, I think the NHS cut-off is 42, so that may be something to bear in mind if there is a chance you may need treatment.
