You wait. At the appointment they'll get a detailed history, review your results an may order more tests. If it's been more than a month/6 weeks since the referral, chase it up with your gp.

Hello. My husband and I had our first appointment at the fertility clinic (Barts) mid May (before this, the GP had sent us for
bloods, pelvic ultrasound and sperm analysis). First of all someone took our paperwork and checked it all over, and I was weighed. Then we had a meeting with the consultant which I think lasted about an hour. He took a very comprehensive history, with questions about our general health, my cycle etc. He talked about options available in terms of treatment and what would be funded by the NHS and what we would need to self-fund. He then ordered some more tests (repeat bloods for us both, repeat pelvic ultrasound for me). We have a follow up appointment this week which I think is to go through the results of our recent tests and discuss next steps.

The wait wasn’t too long from referral to being seen for our initial appointment, I think 8ish weeks.

Thanks everyone for the help, just scared really if we have to go down the ivf route because im overweight and have a high bmi. I only had ablood test and the gp sent me to the fertility clinic straight away, which is a scary thoughti havent had a pelvis ultrasound yet but that appointment due at the end of the month then another appointment at the infertility clinic on 5 August

There are restrictions on certain types of treatment by bmi. Why? Because fertility is affected by weight and the drugs used are less effective in obese (by bmi) women. A common bmi for the cutoff is 30 for ivf (this could vary by ccg).

Private clinics will be happy to take your money and don't have such strict bmi restrictions.

Check out your ccg's policies on the fertility fairness website for more details about when you would be funded for treatment. Unfortunately, it's a huge post code lottery!!

I'm currently in the process of starting fertility treatment (had initial appointment, awaiting second appointment following diagnosis of azoospermia) my BMI is above 30. At initial apointment I was advised to get below 30 in order to access NHS funding. They gave me until my next appointment, if I'm still over we have to pay at that point. My advise is get loosing ASAP. It's heartbreaking to know you are holding yourself back trust me! I have 4kg left to go and I'm feeling a million times better in myself :) good luck

Really you have to pay for ivf if your bmi is above 30,they don't give you 6 months to lose the weight

Yeah. They don't give you 6 months. The nurse we say delayed our second appointment. It should have been 8 weeks after the 1st one but she delayed it to 12 weeks to give me time to loose weight. It was clear that this wasn't normal practice though, she knew I was also a nurse and it was a nurse to nurse favour kind of thing. There is no wait because your GP according to nationwide NICE guidelines isn't supposed to refer you to fertility specialists until your BMI is below 30.

OP, do you know which hospital you are being referred to? Kings was brilliant. Once you have your first assessment it moves fairly quickly. Most clinics offer a range of treatments, you may not need ivf

Scrapbookqueen1 · 16/07/2019 14:12

Also I was just at bmi 30 on first child to receive treatment. Currently trying for second (without the correct bmi Hmm ) clinic not bothered by weight this time as no nhs funding for a second child

I being referred to bedford hospital for scans , dont know if they do ivf
