34, no children and will be TTC next year, should I see a fertility doc now?

Will be TTC at the beginning of next year and currently have no children. Would it be beneficial to see a fertility doctor now to check everything is ok? I have seen online that for £450 they would do an ultrasound on me, check DH sperm, check BMI and discussion with the doc regarding the outcome. Not sure how beneficial this will be though

I suppose you could if you're ultra cautious. It can't hurt. If you do turn out to have issues will you jump straight to TTC?

Checking your DH’s sperm would be beneficial and also your egg reserves but that’s it.

If you do it though you need to make sure you get blood tests on day 3-5 and day 21 of your cycle. Make sure they check AMH and FSH levels.

Alain23 · 22/06/2019 19:52

It appears the AMH test is an additional £105 and just done once throughout the cycle. FSH check is not mentioned.

Is there a reason to wait until next year for trying? In the mean time start taking vitamins and have your partner take vitamins as well. Improve your diet (cut back in alcohol and coffee). I would give trying a go for at least a few months before seeing a specialist.

I started at 36 and didn’t feel the need to see a specialist. I said I’d give it a year and if I wasn’t pregnant then I’d investigate further. In your shoes I’d give it a go for a few months before starting to worry.

MaryShelley1818 · 22/06/2019 21:05

I can’t see any reason why you’d do that now before you’ve even started trying.
We started ttc when I was 38, I was pregnant 5mths later at 39 and now ttc number 2 at age 41. We’ve been intermittently trying this year - properly in the last 3mths and won’t seek any advice until closer to Christmas.
Just see how things go and good luck! 😊

They won't really do anything until you have been trying a year so I would just take folic acid and get as fit and healthy as you can. Also save money Smile

There are much more fun ways of checking your fertility. Why would you need a specialist if you’ve not even tried to conceive yet?

It’s feeding the anxieties of the worried well.

If you think you might have a thyroid problem check that out (and tell the GP you are planning on TTC as it will make a difference to treatment).

Just start TTC when you plan to , and save the money
Not everyone has issues ( I got pregnant 2nd month of trying at age 33 and again at 35 )
Take the multi vits and folic acid , and get DH to eat Brazil nuts and just go for it
