Morning after pill confusion

Hi ladies,

Desperate for some advice/insight on the MAP and ovulation please!

According to my period tracker my fertile window was 5th-10th of this month, and ovulation was due to occur on the 9th. I took an ovulation test on the 9th and it was indeed positive.

Going back a day; my partner and I had a split condom on the 8th. I went to the pharmacy and took Levonelle within 2 hours of the accident. I explained to the pharmacist that I was in my 'fertile window', and she explained that Levonelle works primarily by stopping ovulation.

That's where I'm confused/concerned. I took the MAP a day before ovulation was due to occur but I ovulated anyway!

As I have tested positive for ovulation does this mean that the MAP hasn't worked for me??? What is the likelihood of the MAP working in spite of me ovulating the next day? Does the MAP even work at all during a fertile window? I'm so confused by all this!

(I am also taking a medication called Cabergoline for a pituitary tumor. My consultant did advise me that it can make you more fertile! Hmm)

A positive ovulation test indicates that the hormones required for ovulation are present, not that the egg is actually being released.

Levonelle does delay ovulation, but I doubt 24hours before is sufficient. The MAP is definitely less effective during your fertile window. Personally I'd take a pregnancy test in a week.

@Hmmmbop thank you. I didn't realize that about ovulation tests.

As for the pill, it's pretty frustrating that the pharmacist didn't advise me better; just that it will stop ovulation. Nothing about it being less effective.

I will definitely be taking an early detection preg test next week. Thanks again!

Really daft question, why are you tracking ovulation if you're not ttc?

Apologies if I'm being nosey, but seems strange

OhBabyBabyItsAWildWorld · 12/06/2019 19:31

@Michellebops Not daft, we're all strange in our own ways.

I was diagnosed with a tumor last year after a few years of amenorrhea, and since starting medication my periods have returned.

The tumor produces high levels of prolactin and causes havoc on my other hormones - the amenorrhea being my main symptom. If my periods were to stop again then it may indicate a rise in prolactin, tumor growth, and my medication needing to be adjusted.

I use a period tracker to note my symptoms every month, and one of the features of the app is to show when the fertile window/ovulation will occur. It helps me to feel better informed about my own body to be honest Smile

@OhBabyBabyItsAWildWorld makes sense. I do apologise for being nosey.

I'm all for being informed about what's happening with our bodies.

Good luck and hope you get the result you're looking for ❤️

@Michellebops not a problem. Thank you!
