First visit to Doctor in the UK - what should I say to make them take notice?

Hi

I'm going to see my local Dr (GP) and was hoping to get some advice on what I should be telling them and what tests I should be asking for...

We've been ttc since Dec 03 after being on bcp for 13 years.

I've been keeping track of my cycles and bd dates since Jan, and temping since May. My cycles are 28-32 days, my temps suggest I ovulate and we've been mostly bd'ing at the right times (a few months we only got the day before O).

I've cut down on alcohol, I'm taking Folic Acid, vit B6, starflower oil pre-O, flaxseed oil, calcium & magnesium, zinc (dh is on zinc too). Tried pillows under bum, legs up wall, different bd positions, been having reflexology and can't think of anything else to do!

So what do I say to the Doc?!

BTW cd1 today hence the heightened sense of desperation!

Hi,

I would tell them what you have told us here.

I would now ask for a referral to a gynae; both of you should be tested further to determine the underlying problem. The doc may well want ot carry out initial investigations on both of you like a blood test for you (this is to check your homrone levels; they need to look at your LH and FSH levels very carefully as an imbalance of LH to FSH can be indicative of hormonal problems) and a semen analysis for him before referral.

BTW many gynaes do not take any notice of temp charts purely because they are not totally reliable indicators of ovulation. Such charts can prove to be misleading. Also temp charting can become a constant reminder of there being a problem. Also try not to get into the trap of rigourously timing intercourse at the "right time" as this can do more harm than good.

Its not necessary to put pillow under bum or hold your legs up against the wall post intercourse - these are just myths!. There is no evidence to suggest that such measures help with conception. Enough sperm will get into the vagina from where they will not escape.

Good luck, be persistant with them!.

Thanks 808State - I'm glad you posted as I've read some of your advice elsewhere and it's been great.

I've didn't temp last month and I'm not going to temp this month because as you say it becomes too much of a reminder, although I didn't know it wasn't always reliable either.

Have made an appointment for Monday and am having my hair done tomorrow as a treat for the month!
