What happens once you go to the doctor after a year of ttc?

Just curious atm. DH and I are on cycle 8 of ttc, but i'm just thinking about what may happen a few months down the line if it doesn't happen for us. I know that people say you have to wait a year before going to the doctors if you are not pregnant within a year. What happens once you go to the doctor? Do you just go once before you get referred for tests? Do you have to go multiple times to the doc?

I had a phone appointment, was asked questions about periods, lifestyle factors (smoking etc) and then referred for a pelvic ultrasound and blood tests, dh saw his go and got referred for SA, however ours was secondary infertility and they were very upfront that this was the most we'd get from the nhs, we took the results to a private clinic who did a couple of their own tests too and diagnosed 'unexplained infertility' but happy to say after one round of IVF we have a 6 month old dd. Good luck with your ttc journey!

We were quite lucky I suppose. I had a few blood tests over a few months and then referred to a assisted conception unit. We then both had thorough tests and I was on chlomid within a few weeks of that. After 6 cycles of that we were referred for ivf. Nothing seemed like too long a wait. Good luck.

Did you go to the doctors with your partner, or separately? Just wondering what the protocol is.

I went to the GP alone and was told that they would test me first. I had a pelvic scan, blood tests and swabs. They showed nothing so husband went to the GP and was referred for sperms analysis

Thank you for responses, at least I have a slight idea of what to expect if we get to that stage.

Or they may do nothing and advise you to keep ttc... that's what happened to me.

I went in on my own after 3 months of ttc unsuccessfully but almost 3 years of not preventing with nothing at all.
My Dr sent me for blood tests, more for my own peace of mind I think than anything else. Once they came back I was prescribed iron tablets because my levels were very low.
Don't be worried about going in and seeing them, they're there to listen as much as diagnosis and help.
Good luck!

I assumed from what I had read that if I went to my GP before a year of ttc, that I would just be sent away and told to come back when it's been a year. Is this not the case? As I know I'd feel better if I could go sooner rather than later. GP would also know that I haven't been ttc for a year as I had my implant out sept 18, which will obviously be on my records.

I went to GP after 7 months of trying and they did blood tests but nothing showed that would be causing problems. My cycles are all over the place and when last month was 22 days and then was on CD49 I went again (typically AF then showed up!) but saw a different doctor who said there was nothing on my bloods and not to worry as it had only been 9 months so just relax (the worst) as it can take up to 2 years. If it is causing you concern you have nothing to lose by seeing if they will do any checks before the 12 month point.
