BBT & OPK say I ovulated, scan said not.

Does anyone have experience of this. I've been tracking my bbt and using ovulation sticks for the past 8 months.I have a very regular cycle and always get positive tests and a bbt rise. Today I am on day 19 of my cycle and according to fertility friend I ovulated on day 14. I had a scan today and the consultant said my ovaries looked 'quiet' and he couldn't see any sign of ovulation. Anyone have a clue why this might be - I thought a bbt rise was the most accurate sign of ovulation, but surely it would show up on a scan if I had?

Hm. Curious. At 4/5 days after ov all that should be seen is a single corpus luteum cyst on one ovary and no more they follicles.

Not sure what 'quiet' means - no follicles? No corpus luteum?

physicskate he said there were no follicles showing or a corpus luteum. He has given me Clomid to try next cycle. I don’t understand how there can be a bbt shift and no signs of ovulation though? I know the opks aren’t reliable on their own, but I thought the bbt tracking was? Now I am very confused!

Anyone else have any advice/experience to share? :)

@Constance1234 My dr said it's possible not to ovulate and still have positive opks. He was also dismissive of the temp rise saying that's possible too without ovulation but I'm not sure if he said that because it's possible people aren't measuring the temp correctly to rely on that or if it's actually true. He also prescribed Clomid.

@KatBeCool thanks for that info. Have you started on the Clomid yet? I’m a bit scared as I’ve read that there could be side effects that people call ‘the Clomid crazies’!

@constance1234 OPKs detect LH. This rises and causes ovulation IF your ovaries respond to it. So it can be possible to have LH but your ovaries be unable to respond.

Temperature rise is usually a more reliable indicator as it is due to progesterone released by the egg. BUT it can be very easily affected by changes to your sleep e.g. waking during the night or waking early can both cause your temperature to be high.

I assume if you’ve had a scan you’ve already had blood tests at various points in your cycle to detect progesterone levels?

Not sure what quiet means. Did you ask him? Can you phone and ask for more information?

Oresumably you’ll now use the Clomid and be monitored to see how you respond to it, good luck and hope you get the result you want soon!

@Constance1234 I'm on second Clomid cycle. I didn't get any negative side effects with it, I was actually happier. I'm also taking progesterone, now that is turning me into an irritable bitch. It's different for everyone but nothing over the top and no reason to worry.

crazychemist thanks for your reply, yes I have been tested. I have normal progesterone, FSH and LH, but quite low AMH which is the main reason I've been given the Clomid to try. It's really weird that there was no sign of ovulation on my scan as aside from the opk and temp shift, I also had my usual ovulation pain. Very strange. I'll try the Clomid next cycle and go for a scan on day 10 to see if it is working. It's really frustrating as I got pregnant quickly with my son in 2016, but I guess fertility really does take a nose-dive in your late thirties :(

KatBeCool That's good you didn't get any side effects from the Clomid, I hope the progesterone ones are calming down. I hope your Clomid cycle works this time and you get a BFP soon :)
