MC now ovary removal

Having a really shitty year and in need of a bit of reassurance.

Had a MC at 11wks at the beginning of January. The scan which confirmed the MC also showed a tennis ball sized cyst on my right ovary. Due to the size they wanted to arrange more tests after my hormones had returned to normal which they did after first getting an infection from the MC.

The scans showed it had grown but that it was probably just a dermoid cysts but due to the size would have to be removed.

Had surgery this morning where it turns out that it isn't a dermoid cyst but some kind of tumour that the surgeon hadn't seen before and hadn't been able to make more than a tiny incision on. Fortunately enough for a biopsy which should come back next week. The doctor did say that it would still have to be removed and regardless of what the biopsy comes back with the best case scenario is that that they remove one ovary. Now after complications, I've been kept in hospital overnight and on a load of painkillers to make being conscious bearable. I'm absolutely gutted. Has anyone had an ovary and still conceived? How long did it take? Did it cause you any other benefits or complications?

Just to add to my shitty year our house sale and therefore subsequent purchase also fell through this month... arghhhhh!!

You really aren’t having a good year. Sad

Yes, I had a tumour in an ovary, which got so large it twisted, cut off the blood supply and caused an infection.
I had ovary & tube removed plus more tissue that had been damaged by the infection.

I conceived ds without actually trying for a baby, a couple of years later. No problems with the pregnancy.
Don’t worry about that for now. Just focus on getting better. Flowers

Thank you so much for getting back to me. Appreciate you sharing your story and makes me feel less worried already

I have a friend with four children and only one ovary, although I don't remember why her ovary was removed (as awful as that sounds! Blush)

Get well soon Thanks

I had 4 dermoids removed in July last year, along with my left ovary and tube. My surgeon was sure it wouldn't affect fertility. I've had regular periods since so this is a good sign that all is working. I was told too that if we hadn't of had a child already then we would qualify for ivf..... and I'd be able to possibly freeze eggs. It might be for asking your consultant. They won't want to take your fertility away and will do everything to save it.

We are currently ttc and on our second cycle.

I hope you feel better soon. Did you have keyhole or an incision? Xx

Kelpies · 13/03/2019 15:14

@Peachyx2505 I had keyhole this time but it wasn't a dermoid as they thought so will have to operate again with an incision. Really useful to know what I can push for when I see the doctor next- thanks!

Deffo express your fertility wishes. There will be options for you. I was facing loosing both ovaries but my surgeon was fab.

I hope your results come back quickly. I had an agonising 3 week wait!! They warned me there may be a risk of cancer with the dermoids but luckily I had the all clear.

Bless you having to go through another op. I hope they get it done quickly for you and all is ok. Rest up! Xx

Hi. My sister had an ovary removed. Even had part of her other ovary removed for testing(?). Anyway she was told she needed ivf, her first round failed but a month later she conceived naturally. I think all in all the whole thing happened within 14 months from the removal to her bfp. Her little boy is now 4 months old and healthy and perfect.

She did have bleeding throughout the pregnancy but not sure if that was related.

Ginger1982 · 13/03/2019 18:26

This is quite outing but I had a very large cyst, one ovary and one tube removed when I was 18. It was open surgery.

I have had to have IVF to have DC but this appears to be a combination of me and DH so not just me. No reason you can't have babies.

Good luck!

Hi OP. So sorry you’re having such a difficult time at the moment. A MC and the cyst is so stressful:(
I hope I can give you some reassurance. I lost my ovary to a dermoid cyst age 20 and have got two healthy children, had one miscarriage (all easily conceived) and am ttc again. I’m in my late 30s now so it’s not as easy this time but trust me your fertility will be fine. Even with just one ovary you still have more than enough eggs to last well into your 40s or even beyond. My Gynae told me this.
I hope the results come back clear and you can put all this behind you shortly and move forward. Take care of yourself x

crazyontheweekend · 13/03/2019 22:42

Ps it was also open surgery.

WrexhamBuxom · 14/03/2019 00:04

I am so sorry to hear your news. Prayers coming your way.

I have read numerous stories of people with just one ovary able to conceive, either naturally, or through IVF. After all, it just takes one egg.

It may not be ideal, it may make things a bit harder, but I hope you are reading these posts and are heartened to hear the positive results.
