Anyone else? Not ceoliac just intolerant. Concerned about getting through 9 months if successful on a GF diet or low GF diet. Anyone done it? Any tips?

I don't really understand
I mean celiacs don't just start eating gluten because they are pregnant?
What would make eating GF harder?

Goodynuf · 04/02/2019 20:45

Cravings? Low energy @bumblebee39 I hate following a low to nil gluten diet it's so hard. But I do it as it saves me from pain. I'm concerned it may be even harder! And the more I read re gluten and fertility the more scared I get!!!

I have a dairy intolerance and Iv always found that whilst pregnant and immune system is some what suppressed I can get away with a few things that would of made me sick before

Bumblebee39 · 04/02/2019 21:26

So if you crave something you find the substitute for it. Just as you would normally.
That's what I'm trying to say, that TTC and pregnancy shouldn't affect you at all.
People with allergies to nuts etc. Still can't eat them. Celiacs have to be even more careful with cross contamination due to any issues effecting them and the baby increasing risk of anaemia etc.
It's not contraindicated. People can eat a gluten free diet, conceive, grow and birth a baby (and breastfeed too) without any issues.

Anyone else? Not sure bumblebee understands this issue 😂!

I just can't understand how pregnancy alters anything. If you are genuinely intolerant you just continue as you would normally. You find the substitutes.

Bumblebee39 · 05/02/2019 19:58

I am a pregnant celiac. Confused

Goodynuf · 05/02/2019 20:16

I'm not diagnosed ceoliac. But wheat really hurts me inside. I know I should avoid it but I have cheat days. I'm concerned cheat days may increase due to cravings or whatever etc. Do you think this would be dangerous for the baby? I think I know the answer...if I get stomach cramps and spasms it probably would affect it?

I don't know a lot about gluten but I can't eat potatoes without getting diarrhea and a stomachache (although I occasionally treat and eat fries). I'm 12 weeks pregnant and completely avoid them. I do crave carbs but I just eat something else carby like bread or (ironically gluten free) crackers or couscous. Maybe you can try to divert your cravings by recognising what your body is asking for (veggies, fruit, protein, carbs) and eat something from that food group?

explodingkitten · 05/02/2019 20:26

Treat = cheat

Hermagsjesty · 05/02/2019 20:27

I’m coeliac and pregnant and haven’t had any problems.

Hermagsjesty · 05/02/2019 20:28

If you crave carbs, just stick to the same substitutes you usually would.

Bumblebee39 · 05/02/2019 20:39

I never cheat. I'm even more careful during pregnancy because it's not just me. I don't think stomach spasms would effect the baby though. I spend 9 months puking my guts up! My fear is uptaking vitamins properly.
Could you be tested for celiacs? If it's not celiacs you could stop being so stressed about it and just know what the side effects will be from eating it?
I think it depends how ill you are too. I will avoid anything that might possibly make me sick because I'm so sick already.

pastabest · 05/02/2019 20:47

I'm not coeliac but I eat a mainly gluten free diet at home because members of my family are coeliac.

Managed to get through two pregnancies without needing to go on a massive gluten binge.

I'm with bumblebee I don't understand why you think this will cause a specfic issue in pregnancy unless the only thing you want to eat for 9 months is Wharburtons sliced white and nothing else will do.

Just make your usual swaps surely?

Goodynuf · 05/02/2019 21:19

I'm just trying to read around and get as prepared as possible really. Never TTC before so it's all new. No idea what to expect. My worst fear is that I end up having mega cravings for things that may well be dangerous for the baby. Or thinking it's ok to cheat when there may be severe repercussions obviously because it's not just me I'd have to think about. I've been tested but told it's IBS but I've read it can take years to get a proper coeliac diagnosis.

I'm not that unwell just get back stomach spasms if I over do it.
